Really Greenshed? More guts? When was the last time one of them was shot at? August for me!

You really should avoid those Manchester night clubs. :D . At least you survived which is more than can be said for the two ratings killed in the explosion on HMS Tireless last year.

Do you smirk and banter about the RAF Nimrod XV230 lost with all crew because of a know serviceability fault. Or about the eight Chinook helicopters which have not been usable since they were bought in 2001 because of a failed attempt to design software for them.

Very funny dcb, you on the other hand have not earned any kind of right.
Nor does flying a land based aeroplane confer the right to criticise the operation of an ocean going submarine.

Problem is ,that for a lot of time ,way back in Scottish history, boats have been navigating the narrows of Sky - with it's rip tides -there's a report in a TV program about some Scottish King coming down hard on the Lords of the Isles with a naval fleet ,and in a "rutter"
being advised of treacherous waters around that parts .But to date the most power these have had has been a normal diesel engine.

And, tell me - all very well sitting in a nice lab, etc- have you ever tried working out in some where slightly iffy. Our pilot has .Me - I can relate. One of my overseas company vehicles had a bullet proof windscreen ,a bomb proof chassis, full seat harness , a roll-over cage and a gun locker . My office had a gun cabinet ,as had my company house .

To whom it may concern. I have the upmost regard for the courage of submariners in particular and mariners in general. Nowhere have I been critical of the crew or command of HMS Astute - Robin can do that for us all. Operating a capital ship in inshore waters has always been a risky business and there are innumerable examples through the long history of the British Navy of things going wrong in those circumstances - Agamemnon at the Battle of Copenhagen is one historic example.

And if hanging over the edge of a cliff in a force 8 blizzard trying to set up and direct a rescue operation counts as "working somewhere iffy" then, yes, I have.

I wasn't talking to you. But no. Just throwing stones at me.

People came out in a "force 8 blizzard" just to throw stones at you!? Hardcore!!

Normally the kids just throw stones at us while their dad is loading the RPG.

You seem to have a (understandable considering your unfortunate job) fixation with munitions. There are other ways to die than being shot at. And some of them are more heroic as being shot to death whilst subjecting civilians to collateral damage.

That's even a low blow by your already low standards, dbc.

If Robin wants to fight dirty I am quite happy to reply in kind. I have always had great respect for the military but Robin's attitude is chipping away at that respect. One of my great regrets is failing the navy selection board on health grounds which, looking back, is probably why I took up mountaineering for some excitement.

Yes that's true, fighting a dragon from the back of a giant eagle for example!

If you wind your neck in and have an dispassionate look, you'll see I am not fighting dirty, I'm just telling it how it is; its not my fault you have a chip on your shoulder as a failed mariner.

Or how you see it. You give the impression that you think that there is no job in the world that is as dangerous as yours. I suspect that the colleagues of the soldiers killed while attempting to render safe IEDs might disagree.

Not fighting dirty?

This is getting a bit too personal for comfort; hence the thread lock.
