Think Ross is in a different situation than we are - probably lots of nice wide long straight A roads - could make this kind of overtake just about feasible - but would still treat each car individually as Paul suggests - which is what we basically do when overtaking a long line when on a shout - and we do have all warning doo-dahs as well.

I'm pretty sure that I've done a 30 vehicle block overtake between Perth and Inverness. There are a few straights of well over a mile and gently cruising past 15, checking each one carefully, is pretty commonplace. Recenly on that road there have been roadworks with traffic lights and single direction working that have been making very long gaps in oncoming traffic flow making it even easier.

The trick is not to commit to overtaking when you move to the 'wrong' side of the road. Instead you commit to overtaking when you decide to actually pass another vehicle. It might look like a 15 vehicle block overtake, but in my planning it's 15 individual overtakes. (Probably not actually - there are probably a couple of 2s and a 3 in there).

Decisions to go in good overtaking are usually made on the 'wrong' side of the road. A decision to pull out is a far lesser risk because you can pull back in quickly and easily - when you pull out, you're fundamentally having a look to see if it's good to go.
