I initially picked up on this purely because it is local to me:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-12205911

I'm not commenting on this as no facts are known (except 3 died).

However, I did see a photo on the BBC news sight that could make some folks roll their eyes...

Look just behind the (green) traffic light.

According to the report, the police are appealing for witnesses.

Witnesses :? FFS, there's a b****y camera right there!

Oops, sorry, I forgot - the cameras are only good for one purpose.

How silly of me

Much as I like a bit of humour, I don't think this is the time. Terrible event, and consequences - built-up area and (presumably) lowish speed limit too.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

It was not meant to be humorous - far from it - sorry if it came over that way.

More to the point...

Is that an independently controlled pelican crossing!?!

I REALLY HATE those at light controlled junctions!

I dont know if this is nececarrily relevent to this particular accident but....

The closest I have ever come to having a really nasty accident was because of one of those...! :x

Those responsible for road layouts like this should be strung up by their bloody balls! :x :x

I'd suggest that the camera is either a red light camera or a speed/red light one. (This is a suggestion) --but if either or both parties thought that being caught in the junction area with lights on red- could have led to panic moves leading to irrationally and poorly thought out decisions leading to the accident . So could the camera( or thoughts of trying to not get a penalty for being caught in the junction area, erroneously or not)have led to panic moves creating the scenario for a nasty . If so ,then those implementing the red light philosophy must bear the blame for this accident.

The picture is misleading, as the crash took place at 6.05am - presumably it was dark then.

Three dead in early morning collision

Jan 17 2011 By Dan Coombs

THREE people have died after a collision outside Hatton Cross underground station this morning. (Monday)

The accident took place at 6.05am, with a car colliding with a van on the A30 Great South West Road.

Paramedics and an air ambulance attended the scene of the crash.

Police are working on the theory that the car, containing four occupants, was attempting to turn in the road when it was struck by the van.

Two men, both occupants of the car, were pronounced dead at the scene. The female driver was taken to a central London hospital, where she subsequently died.

The fourth passenger has been taken to a south London hospital, but is thought to have escaped serious injuries.

The driver of the van was not injured. No arrests have been made and enquiries are continuing.

Hatton Cross is within Hillingdon's borders, to the south east of Heathrow Airport, with the station serving the Picadilly Line.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or can assist police is asked to

contact the Road Death Investigation Unit on 020 8941 9011.

Fair enough, Pete.

I expect it merely reflected your annoyance (shared by most of us) about road safety policy being so dominated by anti-speed messages and automated penalties.

Best wishes all,
Dave.
