Cameras snap up 8,000 in first year

Shrewsbury's speed cameras have snared more than 8,000 motorists in their first year, raking in nearly £500,000 in fines, it was revealed today.

The cameras on Spring Gardens, Longden Road and Mytton Oak Road were switched on at the beginning of April last year and bosses from West Mercia Safety Camera Partnership say they are "disappointed" that many drivers are continuing to speed on the roads.

And in a surprising twist, accidents on two of the roads have increased since the cameras were installed.

The two cameras on Spring Gardens, covering both directions of the road, have caught 4,179 motorists exceeding the 30mph limit since they went live. Meanwhile the camera on Mytton Oak Road has snapped 3,268 offences.

People driving on Longden Road have fared slightly better, with 660 offences recorded up until March 31.

Officials from the partnership are still in negotiations with Shropshire County Council about the siting of a further camera on Smithfield Road
