It’s too late, I know, but from the brief clip I saw this is not news to me and I would like to talk about this further and the program.

It’s not good, but it happens, and I know this goes on.

Back later....

Tony

It was very 'last minute' sorry. But whether anyone watched the program or not it was, and is, about dignity in dying and not just reserved just for the elderly I can tell you.

Something of a busman's holiday for me TBH, but chances are you or someone you love in your lifetime will end up in a situation where you don't just make 'three score and ten' before passing peacefully away in your sleep. Sorry to burst the bubble for anyone who thought, or thinks, that's the norm.

It's rather akin to not making a will. We know we are not going to live forever, just like we know we should do so many things for the future which we do nothing about, but 'I'm ok at the moment and sort of enjoying my life in the here-and-now and tomorrow's another day'...

Or, my loving and caring family will look after me when I end up in a 'nice' and 'caring' nursing home, supported by my siblings whom I love and have loved all my life and nurtured. They will reciprocate the life and love I have given them and leave it to the 'caring' system we have paid into all our UK lives - right?

Keeping it short for now, but maybe distasteful food for thought which you have put on the back-burner for some time. It also relates to other inhumane treatment of humans which is afforded animals but not humans, euthanasia.

I am open to any questions or concerns about the care service in this country and I promise to be open and honest, or say 'no comment' if it gets too thorny for me.

It's not really news to me.
No doctors at weekends, hca's doing stuff nurses used to do.
Old or post-op people slowly dying while nurses stand discussing Friday
nights fun.
General disrespect for humans.
It's called "healthcare"

I think you know something more Jom, a lot more, than you have just said.

I don't know if it's from personal experience, I hope not, but mine certainly is

If I become seriously ill I will do ANYTHING to avoid becoming a hospital inpatient.
After the events that led to my first comment, I researched joint replacement operation stats.
The figures are not inspiring, and are not what the hospital tells you.
In patients in excess of 60 years of age some 25-30% can be expected to die within one year of the op, from complications of that op.
A third of those who survive will not regain mobility.
The figures for post-op recovery are a lie, the patients who show a decline in condition are shunted to general medical so orthopedics figures look better (the doctors (sic) in ortho rarely work weekends, so if a patient has problems after the op at weekends there is a serious time-lag before a doctor can be found elsewhere.....which can (and frequently is) days...)

Yep, been there and done that and seen it happen to others and I'm not just talking about the elderly here, I've seen thirty somethings being treated like something off the floor.

I mentioned it because it's something very close to my heart, both personally and professionally. It also bothers me because my auntie is dying in a Nursing Home as I speak and the treatment she has received has been disgusting! She is 84 now and my closest relative to my dear mum who died long ago.

When my, late, brother was in hospital he was abused by a nurse who hadn't the faintest f :censored: g idea or understanding of his condition! I think it's the one and only time I had such an intense revulsion to a woman that I physically wanted to punch her; I imagined myself doing it in fact! A vile and despicable uncaring :b :censored: h and should never have entered the caring profession! I can only hope she reaps what she has sown one day. The only doctor, or whoever that overpaid w :censored: r was on the ward, could not have been more disinterested and indolent.

On other occasions, in my job, I have had to ask a 'carer' to see someone whom I am not there to see myself but I have been so concerned I went to seek help, only to see a young 'carer' sitting down pressing buttons on her mobile phone while the assistance alert is sounding and flashing. Where’s the management or that wonderful person we used to call a Matron and why isn't that young girl put in her place and told to do her job FFS!!!

Bringing it more up to date.. I have been to Nursing Homes, which have a 'Big Underlying Professional Associative' name for excellence where ants have been crawling into the room across filth. (BTW, up to £750 a week for a room where the space they have is not much different to a large shed).

I’ll get to why I posted this now. My advice to you all is simple but, as I know only too well, very difficult when you have work and other things going on to maintain a living and keep your own body and soul together; you must go down to the hospital or Nursing Home as much as possible! You are the front line of care and most importantly love, not the Nursing Home.

One group in society, if I am allowed to mention this, which puts ‘us’ to shame I’ve noticed are Asians. When I was going to the hospital to see my brother there was an gentleman in the next room and he always had some family members, or a family member there, by his side 24/7! I don’t know how they were able to do it but I’m sure that man died with dignity, care and pride.

These are some of the things 'they' don't tell you including the administration of a little something to stop the residents from being a little too "agitated" sometimes allegedly.

It's not just the care that's disgusting anymore, the food is too. After watching that programme on TV last week, about hospital food and the fact that more people come out of hospital with malnutrition than go in with it, it made me so angry.

I had the misfortune to spend some time in three different hospitals about 15 years ago and although the food varied between the three, none was too bad at all (and I'm a fussy eater), what I saw on TV last week was disgusting.

Yes Graball, although I have to say it does vary tremendously from place to place mate. I actually look forward to going to some because I know they have a great restaurant serving good food, if you can believe that. :o

One other thing I want to mention is how the patient is treated like a piece of meat. I always remember my bro saying how he'd counted the tiles on the ceiling so many times. He begged me to take him away from there, but I couldn't. He wouldn't have survived  I was listening to a program on Radio 4 today on this subject and the very same thing was said about looking at the ceiling, which brought back sad memories for me. :(

There wasn't any TV and so you were just expected to lay there for weeks or months and get better with what to stimulate or entertain exactly??? So I bought him a portable mini TV at the time, but that didn't work because the walls of the hospital are so thick the reception was too poor to use the damn thing.

They installed a TV system later, after he died, but you should hear the price they charge. :x And we call this a civilised country! :x :(

There are some good Nursing Homes I go to and I’m sure I will get to that later. I’m trying my hardest to be careful what I say here and please mods, sorry to burden you but look over things I say in case I libel anyone or thing if I haven’t already

Add: This is important to most people reading/watching because, if it hasn't already, this is likely to affect you or someone you love one day.

NHS treatment is quite appalling. Even under Labour who spent billions people were dying left right and centre when they shouldn't. Mum's best friend's husband caught MRSA and died. My great aunt caught MRSA in the same hospital but she lived through it. Work collegue got MRSA from same hospital and died. Aunt caught Clostridium in that hospital and died. Her Dr had put her on the wrong medication for years so she went down hill and turned into a stick. Most people I have known go into hospital don't come out again. Even younger people! Mum went to have a check for a cataract operation and the stupid nurse couldn't even operate the machine. Couldn't speak any English either.

Another relative went into Stafford. Family went to visit and found she was dead and the nurses had no idea how long she'd been dead!!

Friend's mother fell twice in a London hospital. She was also malnourished and dehydrated so her other son, a Hospital Dr, took her off to his hospital where he could keep an eye on her. She's still going. Mad as a box of badgers but she's alive which is more than would be the case had he not kicked up a sh**storm.

Another friend's mother had all sorts of long term health care problems which the NHS couldn't or wouldn't sort out so she had a miserable time. She went into hospital. They discharged her just before one Xmas with pneumonia. Had her back in a few days later so she ended up dead needlessly too. Probably had a good 10 years life left at least had they not been incompetent.

Old people's homes are a disgrace. Any of them that aren't run properly should have the management charged with corporate manslaughter or series abuse. That should focus a few minds.

The food programme appalled me. Doesn't surprise me though with stupid cost cutting. Funny how it isn't the over paid arsehole management that get the cuts. It's always front line staff or basic services. The kent hospital proved you could make decent food cheaply.

I don't plan on ever needing hospital treatment ever. Best way to survive in this life is to keep well away from the medical profession.

Things to do in hospital as a visitor.
Look at the treatment paperwork.
Check same, check the meds that you or the patient is taking
normally (outside) ARE being administered inside: If not, why not.
Check any and all new drugs, the dose and intervals (easy on the net)
Lots of patients receive the wrong drug or dose.
Problems and no interest ?
Don't bother with the med staff, ask for duty management.
The terminals provided at the bedside can be used to
email the local press if necessary.
The worst thing to do is be passive and compliant.
I'll probably be ok…I know some staff personally, and I know
about drugs and dosage.

That's right Jom. Unfortunately, and this is the problem, few people can keep up with what could be weeks or months of keeping vigil.

When it came to a situation I had years ago with my brother, these were my choices: -

A) Give up my job and l lose my income and home.
B) Be there as much as I could after work and burn out. (Bearing in mind being in a hospital/hospice environment is what I am in during my work).
C) Try my very best in the full knowledge that no matter what choices and decisions I make, it will haunt me for the rest of my life and I will wish I'd done more or differently.

It's not easy living with the thought that you failed someone you love and being locked-in with that guilt until you pass away.

So this is why I wanted to say something here. These are matters which you are quite likely to face in one way or another one day and with the NHS and other cut-backs, as I have said, you are the main carer and protector at a time when they need love more than at any other time in their life.
