BBC News hereSetting Courses in the hope of being able to keep motorists on the road so that they can fund their program is appalling and precious about real road safety. It seems to me to be utterly immoral to earn by profiteering from people who commit in some cases technical offences. Looking at light phasing and why this happens is absolutely necessary first. Some roads may benefit from only part time lights and so on. If people have already potentially taken a risky manoeuvre then that has to be addressed properly from every angle not just send people on courses after a problem, as the new magical panacea.

Claire, I find it very strange to hear you denigrating the idea of giving bad drivers extra training in road safety. I thought that that was a main plank of your campaign.

Drivers (most of them) already complete a course in road safety - it is called learning to drive, and pass the driving test.

This latest wheeze is all about funding their little empires, by sending people on courses, from which the authorities make money.
The attendees only pay to go, because it saves them getting points - the course fees cost more than the £60 FPN. It's hardly an incentive to go and learn anything.

R A T with the fire brigade in Cumbria is FREE - and anyone can attend one of their sessions.
Our local community policing team send drivers they have stopped, and those doing PassPlus have to attend the R A T to qualify.
I attended one session, and it was easy to see which youths wanted to be there, and which ones were just using attendance to tick a box somewhere.
