Car MOT text reminder service

The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) has set up a new MOT text reminder service for customers. By registering, you'll get text messages telling you when your MOT is due.

How the MOT text reminder service works
To benefit from the MOT text reminder service you will need to register your details with VOSA. Once registered, three text reminders will be sent to your mobile phone to remind you of your MOT date.

They will be sent:
* five weeks before
* two weeks before
* the day before
The text message reminders will include the vehicle registration number and MOT due date.

To use this service there is a one-off charge of £1.50 (including VAT). This charge will be collected through your mobile phone network provider once your registration has been accepted.

If you do subscribe for the MOT text reminder service, you will still be responsible for ensuring your vehicle has its MOT test by the due date.. This is regardless of whether you receive the MOT reminder texts.

Find out more about how the service works and how you can register on Directgov. here
Sounds like a useful service but just not that sure that I want my details registered on their database.
Edited to add : As I thought this works out as 1.50/yr (13mths) .... so by just programming your calendar (digi or otherwise) job done! :)

Many garages provide that service for nothing, But you might characterise that as touting for work rather than providing as useful service. :)

I think that is already happening for many people. no doubt too that private driveways and off road parking is increasing in value too !

Yes I dare say that the garage that sends out texts, is hoping for repeat business ... I guess it costs them little and may gain repeat business as well as a good reminder.

I like the idea but think that the DVLA ought to offer it for free, i.e. before sending out the we will charge you £80 in 4 wks or 'just' £40 now as if it is 'nothing'! So why shouldn't they send out a text to warn of the impending problem ? :)

Do people think text is an appropriate medium for a reminder from the Government, the non-receipt of which may land you in trouble?

Then there is the issue of those with no mobile...
