I have a little utility which shows by BB activity but it doesnt show what is causing it. Every now and again I see evidence of DL and UL activity but at times when I am not actually doing anything that might obviously be causing it. Is there a utility out there that can log what is generating this activity and what it is actually doing?

Legitimate activity could be any number of applications checking for or downloading updates - i always like to specify "manual" to keep control, but this is hard to guarantee (especially with the likes of Adobe and Microsoft :( ).

If you are running a firewall (which you really should be) then they usually have an option to show active network connections.

Alternatively, open up a command (DOS) window and type "netstat -a" (or "netstat -?" for a list of other options) to see what connections are active at that moment in time, which might point to the culprit.

As Boomer says there is a fair bit of stuff could be legitimately connecting. Windows update, all Adobe stuff (flash acrobat etc.) all anti virus software will be looking for updates, if you have an email client running it may be checking for new email. As already stated use command prompt netstat to find out whats going on. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netstat

Running a firewall is I think a pretty good idea, it can be a pain to work out what is going on and its often not obvious how to turn stuff you don't want connecting off! I'm using a free one called Comodo at the moment, seems to do pretty much what its supposed to. http://www.comodo.com. Think pretty much all firewalls have a "stop all activity" button. Useful for stopping of "writing home" from any installed software.

Just make sure it isn't connecting to the same film site as Jackie Smith's husband!

Software firewalls are arguable fairly pointless unless you have no other protection.

Malware can bypass software firewalls or disable them.

They are easily set up incorrectly.

If you have software you are worried about "calling home" then simple, don't install it. What if the firewall is calling home? :o
