I 'solved' it in seconds, well, at least to the stage where I could apply for a job at GCHQ :D

Google the site for other pages: "site:canyoucrackit.co.uk", then click on "repeat the search with the omitted results included.", and look for the link that stands out :)

I think solving the code is a herring; my technique might be what they're looking for ...

Is that a RED HERRING , or a died /dyed ( aka died& dyed & smoked one ,AKA known as a kipper) herring . :D ,The code is all hex a dex -but i can't be assed to convert it .

Or is the Red herring the 'thinking outside the box' answer that they sought ?

It could be the solution you found is a red herring. Others have suggested the code is in the header of the image not the numbers you see on screen.
