Since the mid-1990s Scotland’s road safety record has been disappointing. Research into public policy may eventually reveal the reasons, but the procurement of that research depends on the willingness of interested parties to sponsor it. The Scottish Government’s commitment to promoting the use of Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) in Scotland by 2014 is, therefore, to be welcomed.
But what might this mean for municipal engineers, planners and the travelling public?
And how do we go about making it happen?
Dr Andrew McIver, Dr Frank Lai, Dr Dave Marples and Professor Chris Lines, all experts in speed management matters will be addressing this seminar on speed management today and better speed management tomorrow.

Sure am glad I have somewhere other than Scotland sorted out to live if required, and by the look of things we won't be coming back if we go. If this is the standard of thinking in an Independant Scotland Gawd help us.

Come the referendum as of reading this article my yes vote is now no, I really don't want to be living anywhere where morons like these have a say in anything .... oh hold on ... I already am .... bu**er! :headbash:

Carfull -Zipps - I'm hoping for ex pats to have a vote - I'd even welcome forced( if financed ) return :D - Must remind my son of his responsibility to vote yes -so that our( if any Scots / American grandkids have another country with right of abode . Problem is that my wife ,although born in England ,is also half Scots ( some might say half mad :D ) as her grandad was an exile from Arbroath . SO perhaps ALL our kids might have a vote ,being the children of a 100% Scot ,and a 50% mother . Now that's something that the Salmon of Holyrood hadn't looked forward to dealing with :roll: :roll:

If it ends up being a pay per mile road tax then it will kill the economy. I dare say they have looked only at the forecasted earning potential, that might 'roll in' and not the consequence of those actions. And as for the 'moral and privacy issues', well ... I guess they just do not care one iota!
Still if Scotland were to inherit the £80 billion share of it's debt from the UK and then an appropriate portion of the (I believe), £8.1trillion debt too then I'd love to know how he is planning to pay it off?
He cannot fleece all motorists, for all debts, before they revolt !!
As for ISA being a concept for road safety ... well frankly, the two should never be placed in the same sentence, and certainly not to anyone who understands and appreciates proper and intelligent road safety!
ISA is certainly not for road safety and is certainly not intelligent, but it 'Is Seriously Advantageous' for those that will earn handsomely from it!

Point to ponder -SafeSpeedv2 .
Could the driver training program ,and the training "to pass a test" be one of the major problems .Could there be a need for driver training to meet the needs of the local area . This is something that even those from Cumbria might notice -that southern drivers might be great on DC/Motorways/town traffic- they can't handle rural roads. This is a problem with the idea of a "driving test" - a one solution to all roads problem . We used to see it in summer in the 60/70's on west coast roads - when the road narrowed ,they slowed to funearal speeds, braked and paniced for nothing . The vision was focused on the six foot in front of them . One procurator fiscal ( mate of my dad) confessed he'd like to see a lot of them up in front of him ,in his professional capacity, ,instead of holding him up .
The other alternative is to SPEND on Scottish roads to bring all roads in the UK up to the same standard . ( hang on whilst author grabs hard hat,and pig sh**t blanket ) .

Are you Scots in favour of dissolution of the union and an independent Scotland then? I don't know any Scottish people so haven't discussed it with anyone or any knowledge what the prevailing opinion is.

As for the original topic, I hope they give you a speaking spot, Claire. Please report back, even if you only manage to get into the audience.

I try not to encourage personal political persuasion on the forums.
You may start a new topic in general chat if you wish about the pros and cons of Scottish devolution if you wish.

ISA will never improve motorist's abilities nor skill. It will increase their paranoia and alter their visual perception.

FOR the political side - sorry -BUT-it might focus attention on a better road network .
As for focusing attention on speed regulation -we've had a decade or more of that - and the stats prove it don't work . What has been proved to work.What from the start of motoring is an educating , advisory,but proficient professional traffic police force . Blokes who are professional drivers -who drivers respect ( or get AN ACID LECTURE ,AND POSSIBLY A TICKET) ,not for breaking some lolipop speed, but acting in a daft/dangerous manner . To them ,the manner of driving, not just the speed was the justification for a pull.
