i've stuck your experiences on another forum ,along with Graball's findings,where someone was thinking of going there .
Similar experience to one son & I had some years ago . In those days 2MB was standard for our distance from exchange on BT.Then,I found ( lets call them UKOFFLINE ,so as not to name & shame), a part of a not so hardnet BB company . They promised a "revolutionary " new BB service with a guaranteed 8MB to our house . We got 2MB,and advised to let it settle. Problem was it didn't, and latency was such that my son was having problems gaming. ( A reason we got the extra speed).
Months passed ,with no improvment ,and no return of calls . So - I cancelled the DD ,and phoned (not so )hardnet.com -the parent company. A week later ,we had a MAC and , back to BT( till they got greedy. )

Ironically my brother called me to google the ip address of a Thompson/Technicolour router this week. He was at a pub who wanted wi-fi switching on

iirc the routers ip address was 192.168.1.254

Username Blank (default)
Password Blank

He did have to do a factory reset (there's a pin hole reset on it somewhere) and it took a fair while to log into.

Yep, mine had a reset that didn't work Outcast. I could hear the small click and I held it in, but nothing reset at my end or theirs.

Now that it all works well I can look back at it like a storm in a teacup, but at the time these things feel like a tsunami. I think, certainly for me, it's because it's simple, obvious stuff - or at least it should be! But you have to do everything yourself, in fact in the end I still had to set the thing up!

Once I detached the Ethernet cable, the router has a WPS button that you push at the same time as the Netgear Wi-Fi USB dongle button, so I can use it remotely upstairs. It should then 'handshake' but it was more like an arm-wrestle which times-out, so eventually I entered the wireless information myself manually until it finally worked.

It's the same s t that I have to tolerate at work. Software or firmware that is badly or hastily done; made all the worse because the manufacturers either deny it or don't give you the right support and information.

Or, the Company people that all know the information that the clients actually requires, fail (somehow), to pass it to the telephone / technical support team!
I am quite sure that many items are returned un-necessarily, because 'technical' staff fail to recognise or know about simple procedures, or simply are nothing like technical enough.

Proper requirements engineering is an important part of the software procurement process. But those that write the actual program to the specifications generally don't go and visit where it is going to be used or talk to end users. I think this an important missing part of the process to ensure properly working software for any unusual environment.

Yes, in my case can they really not employ just one technician and I.T. expert so that he/she can take me through it all and make the decision what to do?

Instead I had a woman who, to be fair, was trying her best with some basic training but no expert. Worse still, as I say, when it all went wrong I was expected to do the running around.

That's not good customer service in anyone's book and does not endear me to be faithful. I think most of us are willing to pay a little more for better service.

BT are currently advertising the same deal at £16 per month. Now there's a name I know..

And their call centre ,if/when something goes wrong ? After offline ,we went to BT ,who upgraded our service. Problem was that they also changed the latency mucking up the ping time .Which meant that if my son was gaming on line ,it caused massive problems .I had to resort to a supervisor to get it cured(and to get someone who spoke English) .They swore blind it had not been altered, till I read off the diagnostic report from the modem .What really bothers me these days is that after OPENREACH, I see a lot of vehicles doing the rounds with "A Contractor ,working on behalf of Openreach" .I know the training isn't as good these days, but after watching one of thes guys replacing an overhead feed to a house ,I think I could (after forty odd years away from the game) have done it faster .

Get a tesco clubcard. They're doing broadband for £2.50 a month for 12 months. Can't be worse than BT!

Thought about it - since I'm on a dongle , limited to 7.2Mbps and 1Gb a month . But it's only for those with a live phone number ,it seems .Pity ,as at £7 a month , it's only a few quid more than my T Mobile costs me for phone & BB. Possibly cheaper since my landline alternative( Lymcomobile) costs me 3p a minute to landlines . Still trying to see if I can bet a BT pensioner discount ,but not holding out much hope.
