Interesting subject. I drive a 1998 Passat 1.8 turbo which, despite it's age and it's 203,000 miles, still goes like the proverbial off a shovel (and is great for overtaking). However I have recently acquired a 2001 vw transporter van 1.9td which is super-cool but, it has to be said, is something of a slug. Consequently, I'm always mindful of those who want to go faster than me and will always assist overtakes wherever possible. But, almost every time i take it out, i see some very "interesting" overtaking manoveres and I'm convinced that half of them don't want to go any faster than me, they just want to be in front of me. Quite amusing to witness!

I'd suspect vehicle /badge snobbery. I get it regularly, despite the fact that on rural roads ,on the windy sections I start to lose them and it's only the fact that I don't get up to what I consider is a speed excessive for the straights ,being mindful of the fact that there's possibly some more bends up ahead that lets them catch up .

It might be the "oncoming" thing, but again I'm a pretty defensive/cautious driver and don't take risks. The reaction seem more one of anger than fear...

Yep fair enough. Perhaps buy one of the little 808 HD cameras and place it on the dashboard (with bluetack - works very well) and film some of your drives, then when this happens, (state when just in case it won't have been seen on the film) and then we can analyse the whole event (privately).

I get this as well. I still think there's people convinced that NSL is 50mph, or even 40mph, rather than 60mph. Not sure if it's badge snobbery or not (I drive an old Golf with 160K+ on the clock), but it does seem to be the people carrier drivers that dislike being overtaken.

Whether they somehow think that "you're endangering my kids/family by overtaking" (can't see how thought) is anyone's guess?

I recently acquired one of these:

Once the weather is nice enough for Porsche driving (I use the Saab 9-5 in the snow) I'll fit it and perhaps get a film of this behaviour

:)

Certainly their are 'types' of people who purchase certain vehicles and so that can tend to lead to similar behaviours from those groups !

In these sad times of technical offenses being paramount the call for protecting one's innocence is becoming tragically (possibly) necessary.

Edited to add these links to alternative smaller camera options :) : (there is you tube of the best of these little cams...)

I've been considering installing one of these for a while now. After the behaviour I witnessed this afternoon I'm almost ready to reach for my wallet.

Following recent snow the conditions weren't exactly ideal. And driving through a temp 50 motorway limit enforced by SPECS cameras there was a string of cars in lane 1 running almost nose to tail. As in my Golf would have only just fitted in the available gaps.

Lane 3 was clear, so I moved into lane 3 leaving a clear lane between myself and the "convoy".

Is this behaviour caused by SPECS or just by stupidity?

Nice addition might be a PUG ( 10/20/) series detector   .I now tend to watch for these and give them a wide berth .

Before long, every stretch of road will have solid white lines down the centre - overtaking will be verboten in the drive to reduce 'road casualties' by the anti-car lobbyists in local councils...

:headbash:

I wouldn't count on it yet. With the rush to make money locally out of decrim of parking ,councils are finding that the yellows need to be upgraded to be enforceable ( and let them cash in) . Whickh do you think will have priority - cash or safety ?
