What are peoples opinions on the proposed 2 tier "road tax"? One rate if you don't use A roads and motorways, a higher rate if you do?

IMO another daft idea requiring a huge infrastructure cost to enforce.

IMHO-an attempt to get road tolls by the back door .

How would it work? When I tax my car for 6 months, would I have to decide whether I was likely to use a motorway in the coming 6 months? Would I get a rebate if I didn't? Could I "pay on the door" if I did?

...and how would they know??

(Oh, I think I know the answer to that one...) :(

Simples- stick up ANPR ( all in the name of security and crime prevention). Simple tweak and they know where you got on and off.

I forget where I read it (ok, I'll try to find it again) but the 6-month road tax is likely to become a thing of the past. Replaced with a monthly direct debit or an outright purchase.
Apparently the success of the tv licence monthly dd payment has prompted a host of drive-now, pay-now plans !

56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing

The best way to get from one end of Stockport town centre to the other is by using the M60!

Another half baked idea from this so called Government.

I live alongside an A road, so do I have a choice?

I thought motorways were built to relieve traffic from towns and villages. You only have to see the chaos when you get a motorway closed and traffic has to divert onto minor roads.

As I see it just another smokescreen to squeeze even more money out of the motorist.

On the face of it, this seems like a good idea. However, it is full of problems.
For example, my wife uses her car to commute to work, and never uses the motorway, therefore I could tax her car as not using motorways. So I save money right?
Wrong! Imagine this, we decide to go off on holiday, being that her car is the more capacious, this is the vehicle we would use. So how do I go about getting it registered to drive on the motorway?
Many more scenarios present themselves, she may wish to visit someone and the quickest route involves a motorway (a common scenario in our area), she would wither have to purchase VED for motorway, or travel miles out of the way to avoid the motorways.
I can see this as being as farcical as the vignette situation in Austria. I have driven through Austria many times, to get to Germany. Because the vehicle I drive on this trip is larger than 3,500kg I am not eligable for the sticker. So I would have to go through a lengthy process to purchase an electronic toll device. What I actually do is drive through Bregenz, which I would have thought the powers that be would want to discourage!

I agree but it has major road safety issues and discourages use of the Motorways which are the safest roads, it even encourages use of minor roads and this WILL see a rise in the KSI figures. A totally flawed policy <SIGH> ....
