I got flashed at about 1 am this morning by a gantry camera - thing is, there was no sign at all on the gantry to say that it was a camera (like there usually are) - so can I assume that it was a dummy unit? I didn't notice whether there were two flashes or one.

Only one sure-fire way to know.

Keep an eye on the letterbox for the next fortnight. :(

Was it in the variable speed limit section, or elsewhere? And what speed were you doing?

As I understand it, the fixed cameras in the VSL section are set to trigger at 94 mph when the NSL applies.

In the VSL - it would have been around that speed, give or take 10 mph - but I don't make a habit of looking at my speedometer when I'm not at a speed camera. Something definitely triggered, and I'm fairly certain that it was at me.

Why is that they are allowed hidden speed cameras there, but nowhere else? There definitely wasn't a sign on the gantry...

IIRC the camera signs indicate that you're on a stretch of road where cameras may be operating, they aren't intended to mark each and every camera site along that stretch of road.

I thought fixed speed cameras had to be clearly visible from such-and-such a distance... Gantry cameras are not visible (well, you see a gantry :) ) until you are flashed. Or pass through at 93 or whatever figure, serenely.

You're on the wrong site fella, you are looking for www.pepipoo.com where they are focussed on camera prosecutions, here we are focussed on road safety legislative changes.

The M25 "hidden" cameras are a part of the variable speed limit system. Caneras can be anywhere and everywhere, hidden or not, PROVIDED there is no netting off.

I think.

you can usually tell which gantrys have cameras on as you can usually see the top of the gatso box as you approach.

mind you at 94mph (+/-10mph nice speed awareness there ;)) i don;t think i'd bother fighting it.

Legally yes, but it is still a breach of the government's word and brings the whole system into disrepute.

Had you asked me at the time what speed I was doing, I could have told you. Asking me to remember that's 30 hours after the event's a bit harder... And whether I fight it or not, I'm certainly not accepting a FPN!

I've since been to some of these camera sites, and I see what you mean - although most of them do seem to be on gantries that have a camera painted on them. At the very least they could explain what those signs mean a bit better...

There are camera warning signes there. You must have been in a 60 zone. The need to flash twice. If yours only flashed once it was probably not "armed". They are planning the same system on the refurbed section of the M42.

And this switch of concentration from the road ahead contributes so much towards road safety. Do they never think about what the consequences will really be? Eyes off road, and for 100 yards at each gantry focus on gantry and speedo.

Oh for the days when the hazards that drivers looked out for were other road users, pedestrians etc instead of "Is that a Camera", "What is the blo*dy limit now", "Am I going 50 or 51?" :x

Since there has been a new thread opened on this topic, I thought it worth mentioning - no NIP, I'm off scott free.
