I find it utterly insane that I can fly to Barcelona for less cost than taking the train to London - and it's not because the air-fare is ludicrously low!.. And, I can get a seat!

Ah! but I do believe the ecologists want the airlines to be charged fuel tax.. which will bump the fares up...! :?

i agree with that. why dont all commercial vehicles have the same rights? buses, trucks, planes etc. they are all commercial vehicles so why not give them all the same tax free fuel?

Not really.. It will effect the long-haul routes because they have to refuel at either end, but they're not the ones the "ecology" lobby appear to be after. The short-haul operators will simply stop refuelling in the UK. Shades of Mr Stobart and his trucks.

I'd guess that some of the reasoning behind tax-free air fuel is that they are refuelled "airside" - which is effectively an extension of the "duty-free" area. I suppose it could be said that intra-EU flights are not allowed any duty-free allowances, so fuel should be the same - but it's a hell of a lot easier to take an aeroplane to another country to refuel it than a truck! :-)

You know what.

It is the hand-wringing, bleeding-heart, sandal-wearing, tree-hugging, tofu-eating wets like Etoile who live in their own little city-dwelling microverse that are the biggest threat to free thinking society than our newly elected Communist government will ever be.

As an example. I am a quantity surveyor for a construction company working from a satellite office in Stafford. Living in Telford, this is a good thing as I have spent the last 8 years suffering a commute into Dudley. Now, I throw the challenge down to Etoile.

The morning journey is now an agreeable jaunt along the country road that is the A518, and i can leave home at 8 a.m. or 6.30 a.m. depending on whether I wish to arrive at the office on time or early. I have three sites to look after, each demanding one visit per week. One in Tamworth, one in Lichfield, one in Rugeley. I would ask Etoile to work out both the time and cost should I choose to employ public transport for all of my journeys during the week.

I would suggest that it costs far more than the £45 per week in diesel I currently pay, and that I would leave home far earlier and arrive home far later than I currently do!

Etoile there is more to Britain than stinking, smog-filled, bad-mannered, self-centred cities. Wind your neck in and deal with it.

S
