So many times I have heard it said that if you don’t speed then you have nothing to worry about. So why am I worried?
I got flashed yesterday on my way to work in the Limehouse Link tunnel in East London. The speed limit is 30 mph and my speed at the time was an indicated 28mph and from GPS observations I know that at that speed my speedometer over-reads by about 1.5mph, so my true speed was around 26.5mph.
I ride this route twice a day every day, so am fully aware that the cameras are there and was well within the limit as I approached them. The cameras in that tunnel are all digital so there is no doubt about them having “film” in them.
What worries me is the possibility that the camera may say some feasible but untrue speed. Yes, I know that the two photographs should be physically checked to pick up any of these kind of errors, but from reading about previous instances of people receiving NIPs for impossible speeds, we know that this does not always happen.
I also know that should I get a NIP and eventually have to fight the matter, that my true speed can be calculated by using the distance travelled, if necessary by me physically measuring the distance on the road with a tape measure. But again, with the recent doubts being cast on the accuracy of the timing between the two photographs, even that is no longer a certainty in my mind.
My point is that I AM worried even though I know I am totally innocent and was not speeding. The thought of having to try and prove that though is not a pleasant thought.
I also know that the chances are that nothing will come of this incident, but I will still be living in fear of looking at my post for the next two weeks or so.
Regards,
Russ
