I've just seen a camera van and, for probably the first time ever, I totally agree with it's positioning and application.
It was on the A600 going South into Hitchin from Bedford, just past the entrance to a school with its laser placed to catch those approaching the school entrance. Bearing-in-mind that many drivers do 45-55 along there at mid-afternoon, irrespective of the presence of kids, then this is, surely, the application most of us have been seeking. I think I feel an email to the Herts camera partnership coming on now to congratulate them on some common sense at long last.
If only they did this all the time and aimed at the real unsafe driving practices.

I want these things to be completely destroyed - but if we have to have them, then this is probably a better use than the way they have abused them in recent times.

I still think a copper or two milling around in marked police cars would be better for everyone.

Makes a change - any time i've seen a camera(van or fixed) near a school the camera has been about 100yds afterthe gates - sporting eh - lets the driver race past the school, bag a couple of kids and then slow down.

Was going to ask same question (about speedo watching), but paul has beaten me to it.

Now do we ask the camera operator how he/she feels if a child gets hurt in that sort of situation as they're possibly partially responsible( not legally, but in my book morally).(They use a similar arguement against speeding - how do they like it when the roles are reversed)

Likewise - i've passed a certain school in warks at 7.15 on a sunday morning to find a camera van parked nearby .
Thought it strange to find one there at that time .Could it be trying to hide??

Also passed one on the only straight on a county lane to find accident at crossroads a mile away.
The reason for the van on this lane ( NSL, STRAIGHT ONLY PLACE WHERE 60 COULD BE DONE) was due to high accident rate - but not as high as at the cross roads.
Asked why not on major road just before crossroads to slow traffic - not enough speed related accidents .( Partnership speak i think for not enough cash to be made)

Will this not have the same effect as far as speedo watching is concerned?

AArgh a 'safety' camera [glance at speedo] slow down, [glance at speedo]...

AArgh a trafpol [glance at speedo] slow down, [glance at speedo]...

Not really - with scam, numerical speed takes precedence over all.Under the limit- their gospel is you're safe.Over the limit - guilty - no arguement thats their motto - thats why people watch their speedo more ( and the mirror to check if it has flashed so you can check your speed).
Trafpols are trained to use their brain - listen and educate first - thats what i have heard and seen on here.
Which one would you prefer - and if you've been nauty enoughto get a ticket - you get it with advice and the reason for getting it so at least you can try to make sure you don't do it again .
Bring back trafpols.
