Now, I'm a public-spirited sort of guy, so when I spotted the Talivan on the motorway this morning, I mailed out:

Quote:
For those of you travelling between Telford and Birmingham today, the speed cameras are out on the overbridges at junction 7 of the M6 (the A34 junction)

(We have a fair number of people doing this journey at the moment)

I had a few "thank you" mails from colleagues glad to be warned (even though at that location it was tricky to get above 60mph!) - then this one went round in reply:

Quote:
However, should you not be breaking the law then this will not be an issue.

I ignored this as the work of a po-faced anal-retentive, then this was followed up (to me only):

Quote:
There is a very important point here - you may view this as helpful but others who may have been involved in serious accidents and injuries as a result of speeding drivers may not.

Regards

Resisting the temptation to start a debate on speeding vs. dangerous driving, I replied to this:

Quote:
Oh, dear, the cat is really among the pigeons here. I DO NOT intend to incite speeding by ******* staff, or by anyone else, and invite you to point out where I have done this. However, it is really not that difficult for anyone whose eyes are not glued to their speedo to drift a little over the threshold to be booked, and to end up with 3 points and a £60 fine. Four of those and you're off the road, and most of us need our cars to do our job.

Perhaps we should remove the link on the ****** Portal to "Telford Speed Cameras" (site run by the West Mercia camera partnership). Obviously this site is encouraging people to speed where there are no cameras ;-)

Can I also point out that I have a clean driving licence and have NEVER been booked for speeding.

(Work details and names removed to protect, well, me!)

Clearly government propaganda does work with some. Do the rest of you find this as well?

Totally. I've explained to people how regression to the mean allows the scammers to claim success even when they are failing. I've had conversations where people have admitted that they are constantly checking their speedos now instead of watching where they are going. I've pointed out the 85th percentile rule and how that shows that the safe speed is not neccessarily the legal one. I've pointed out that average speeds aren't dropping at all and fatalities per bvkm are no longer falling and yet some of them still say "Yes, but the cameras slow people down so they must save lives"

What can you do? The senior managers/directors at work seem to have a slightly more pragmatic attitude though. All their vehicles have Road Angel installed

send the person another email, pointing out that by giving the location of the Talivan, you were in fact encouraging your friends and colleagues to drive within the speed limit.

Oh, I did, I did! It seemed to shut him up. Also adding the bit about how I and most of my colleagues needing their licences to do their jobs effectively, and how I would have hated it if any had been lost though carelessness!
