Camera operator, you have just summed up all that I dislike in the scamera argument.

You would rather haunt the local duel carriageways and motorways than spend the good part of your day in the residential area's, and the reason why you don't spend time in these areas is the revenue factor, nothing to do with safety

While your sitting next to that school or playground, set in a 30MPH zone you might catch 2 cars every half hour, but the effect you have on awareness is huge and well worth it.

As opposed to a motorway where you rake the cash in with no concern as to the safety of the community

you might think your course is just, but one day you will realize your part of the problem

I just hope too many young lives are not lost in the mean time

Martin

"Camera Operator"
thats a new one on me, i have got several residential concern sites that i visit nowand then probably once in 2 / 3 months, i tend to concentrate on my core sites on a weekly basis slotting in resident sites as and when possible

It might be a new one on you but it is part of the government saftey camera partnershp rules. But rules are for breaking arn't they :o

Never figured that out. Most cameras are in 40+ zones. while most fatalities are in areas where the speed limit is 30. Must be a money thing...

I travel the Bristol to Slough stretch about twice a week usually in peak times and have never seen a Talivan ! No fun for the scamera ops I suppose in the rush hour traffic ?

I gotta say this whole M4 camera thing was blown right of all proportion IMO, as there are roadworks Gatzo's and Scamera vans regulary on motorways all over the country long before the hyped news on the M4.

When I first heard the news I thought they were talking fixed Gatzo's (M25 style), SPECS or similar. The first few times I drove this stretch I was doing about sixty looking for the cameras !

Hi and welcome BaZa.

True that scameras have been used on motorways during roadworks, mostly temporary gatsos I think. At least, I've never seen a talivan in roadworks but have seen quite a few temporary gatsos. What was a bit different about the Wilts M4 thing (AIUI) is that they were enforcing a normal motorway NSL, which may not have been unprecedented either, but they were putting a lot of effort into it. Clearly this was a numbers game for them as they know full well that motorway speeding is very common when traffic conditions allow. I think that's one of the reasons for the protest.

BaZa wrote:

That's another reason. Motorways are nice and safe to drive fast on when you can concentrate on the job at hand. Drivers could do without unnecessary distractions, or even being told that there might be unnecessary distractions. Parking them up on bridges is particularly annoying. We shouldn't have to check what's on the bloody bridges when we ought to be more concerned with the traffic around us. Mind you, given the abject failure of the authorities to keep stone throwing scum off of motorway bridges maybe we do need to keep an eye on them, but that's another issue.

Yup - Wilts idea scams on series of bridges and an absolute zero tolerance - which is impossible in real terms given overtaking clearance required to get back lane with a decent space - even when L1 vehicled is just about 65mph.

M6 Shap and Lancs operate on bridge between Lancaster and Preston fairly often too. But not on smae scale as this operation and in fairness to our local SpeedFinder General - he's always at same spot at Shap

Fixed Gatsos/SPECS part of roadworks and genreally - you could not drive much above these speeds anyway on currnet M60 roadworks.

Believe M66 is under repairs again - so I'm told?

So, what does the 'zero tolerance' mean in Wilts in true terms. In Scumbria the zero tol means you get scammed at 79 mph? Obviously it doesn't mean getting scammed at 71 mph, as their own equipment is not that accurate and everything has an error, however small. The ACPO guidelines say that it's limit + 10% + 2 mph.
I recently went through the Wilts scammers at 80 mph on the clock which I reckon is about 77 true and that nearly 4 weeks ago and nothing has arrived, so I guess that's OK then.
I Bedfordshire on the A1 at Sandy we think it's 60+ in a 50 when you get done and on the A507 it's 70 in a 60 for it to scam, or so it seems.
Prats the lot of them, anyway! If only they were making some sort of contribution to road safety.

I would have been praying all the way home for an obstacle to appear in my path which would have caused me to slam the brakes on if that had been me.

Unfortunately Martin, there are a few old bill out there that like to think they own the place and there are two ways of dealing with them.

1. Knock the smartar*e motherfu**er straight out.

2. Complain immediately to the relevant body.

While option 1 gives an immense feeling of self satisfaction, it will end up getting you straight in the dock, and for this reason alone I would not recommend it.

Option 2 is the best move, as even when they sweep the complaint under the carpet, it will stay on the officers record.

Hi all

Back from holiday's and dreading the M4/M42/M6/M5/M1/M25/M23 nonsense already.

Camera Operator, I am sorry if I hit a Nerve, you of all people should know, we all know what you lot are really about so your not kidding anyone.

Gixxer, I like option 1, but think option 2 might just have worked.

Regards

Martin

Of course you do and they usually have a strict criteria

1) A recently lowered limit(usually 30 from 40)
2) Nice and wide with long straights
3) Limited park cars
4) A high number of people exceeding the speed limit due to 1, 2 and 3.

Why bother sitting around all day in a residential area where few people exceed the speed limit, because it's often unsafe to even do the limit . Of course one or two will speed, but then they will have false plates or be unregistered, and your too comftable sat in your van to do anything about it aren't you?

Yes your right, only at night though I believe. From what I've heard they shut it between J2(Bury) and the Ramsbottom junction where it become the A56.

I've seen quite a few on the M55 as well. If there's any motorway that could have an increased limit then thats it. 3 lanes, no bends and flat as a pancake. That's why I can't understand why they would target it. Well no that's a lie, I know as well as everybody else why they target it and thats because most people do exceed the speed limit on that section in complete safety.

Compare that to the M65 between Preston and Blackburn and you will see few people significantly exceeding the speed limit because its nowhere near as safe as the M55. It's a bit of a rollercoaster with lane drops and gains and 2 lane stretches etc.

Oh yeah and there were Scamera vans when the M65 was being resurfaced in Burnley - they were on the bridge after the Brierfield turn off.

Capri2.8i, Very well put.

Camera operator, I am sorry your taking the but of my criticism, do you have any comments that would justify your time AWAY from residential area's?

I would have said a good old fashion police office in a shinny new car with POLICE on the side would prevent most of the problems you ( I guess) claim your there to prevent, leaving you ALL the time in the world to park outside my little boys school

Dont you agree?

Regards

Martin

Hi

the last couple of weeks have been busy here too, summer holidays, who needs them.

I think the problem I have with this whole subject is the way in which you (royal you on this occasion) carry out your duties, as if you and you alone are correct and the possibility that you might be attacking the subject from the wrong Angle is ignored.

I posted a reply on PePiPoo a few weeks ago. I was talking to a camera operator, we were talking about the New seven bridge, New 50MPH limit.

I asked why he thought 50MPH was justified, He said "Far to many cars were approaching the tolls over 100MPH".

this seams to be the logic these days. although I do not see any problem travelling at this speed at the appropriate time I can understand there are times this speed is too quick.

But the logic here isn't to enforce the 70MPH limit which has done a good job for years, its to make criminals of us all and reduce the limit to 50MPH.

So from your perspective do you see this happening in your area and what is your opinion on it

Kind regards

Martin

So from your comments am I right in thinking this limit had more to do with the opinions of the toll operators than from a proven safety point of view?

I believe a veriable speed limit would be better than a blanket 50MPH. as you say, the electronic signs are impossible to miss.

I also dont think, Just becouse the signs are easy to read, the local authority should be aloud to enforce a lower than needed speed limit and then tag us all as bad drivers when the limit is broken.

off for a pint now.

have a good bank holiday.

Regards.

Martin.
