The Surrey Safety Camera Partnership is relatively recent. Their website is here:
http://www.surrey-safecam.org/

It seems that mobile enforcement began on the 9th August. The locations of fixed and mobile enforcement are given on their web site. It's interesting that they will actually be removing some fixed cameras where it's felt they're no longer needed. The site, usefully, gives you pdfs with the info for each location.

One of the mobile locations caught my attention - the A308 from Staines towards Kingston:
http://www.surrey-safecam.org/fe/fileup ... uage=e.pdf
This road was NSL not so long ago, now 50mph. Oddly enough, they have found that 70% of vehicles exceed the 50mph limit. It's a dual carriageway with two lanes either side of the central reservation. They give figures for daily traffic flow, so we can calculate the probability of having a serious accident if you speed along that stretch of road - it's less than one in a million.

they've been using their mobiles for a while, they've only recently had the right logo's painted on them.

surrey's newest speed camera has already been torched

I find it funny that they claim cameras have reduce fatalities by 40% when the very next link shows a 10% increase in fatalities over the last 10 years

I think the previous vans were number plate readers rather than speed cameras, but I could be wrong. The safety camera partnership has only been formed fairly recently.

There seem to be a lot of examples of the cameras having made things worse, e.g. this one:
http://www.surrey-safecam.org/fe/fileup ... uage=e.pdf
0.33 KSIs/year before, 0.55 KSIs/year after.
They say the camera needs to remain, or casualties might increase!!!
This is far from the only example, unfortunately.

No Surrey definately had a covert scamerati before forming the pratnership.

I've spoken to the talivan men a few times - never found one that was actually happy about their job, but said it was part of being a casualty reduction officer and they had to be seen to spend a certain amount of their time collecting speed tax and addressing community concerns. The money just went to the treasury.

I must admit working with these people for bikesafe gave me a real dilema. The guy who runs bikesafe for surrey police is also a talivan man and is the man running community speed watch and speed awareness days. However, he has gone against the establishment in focusing his efforts on education even if it is slightly misguided.

I don't exactly do a job that enriches the human race either, So it would be a bit of the pot calling the kettle..

on a different note did you read their SPECS announcement for the A322?

I don't trust them for one minute. Secondly is it legal for a private company to set up a SPECS without public consultation?

who gives them the right to be big brother?[/url]

It is worse than that. The very pesence of this trial of technology on the public highway will cause accidents as sure as apples are apples, for all the reasons the yellow boxes did. I truly despair.

Part of the bloody problem with the A322 is that silly 50mph limit that changes into NSL when the road reaches the Berkshire border. Now either it's an astonishing coincidence or its a result of the two authorities, partnerships, whatever being unable to agree on what limit is appropriate. How the hell do they expect anyone to take them seriously?

yep it's very odd.

50mph in a dual carrage way. then into a 70 zone with junctions and cross roads. then back to a 40 zone as you get closer to bracknell and then take a left and it's 60mph through a road with a park and houses backing on.

Yep, see you know it well too. Maybe they set the limits in the pub after a few too many jars of falling down water. Mrs Gatsobait's idea is that somewhere in the local councils there's a book running on where the daftest rules can be put. :hehe:

Many people aren't aware of how few rights you have over this sort of thing when you're in a public place (which you are when on a public road). Anyone can take any photo they want of something that can be seen with the naked eye if they're stood in a public place, even if the photo includes private property such as a car in it. The resulting images can be used for most things other than "commercial" use, by which is meant advertising, so you can't snap a picture of somebody in the street then associate them with a product in an advert, but you can do most other things with the picture, such as using it for editorial purposes in a news article. This is why they can get away with showing cctv footage on tv - the people shown are in a public place, so have no rights to prevent editorial use of their image in this way. I expect running character recognition software against the images to test a SPECS system is well within acceptable usage of images taken in a public place.
