Hi all,

It has always appeared that speed limit reductions and camera enforcement seem to go hand in hand. And it got me thinking, as North Yorks and Durham don't have camera partnerships, have they also got decent speed limits - like properly retained 40 limits on high-quality urban roads and NSL on rural roads, as opposed to many counties where you increasingly see 40 and 50 limits on rural parts of good quality A roads?

Obviously the drop in KSI in these two counties can be put down to police enforcing speed limits instead of cameras, but I'm sure consistent speed limits which better represent the quality of road/environment and do not patronise most drivers are also helpful for safety.

Yep, they have. Sensible NSLs, Sensible Village speed limits, and most people respect them. Two excellent counties which I enjoy motorbiking through.

Well....

Apart from that stupid reduction from NSL to 40 on the way into Tadcaster from the West on the A659.

It's not there to slow HGVs (a lot use this road) since the speed limit for HGVs always was 40 there.

You can see the 30 signs from well beyond where the 40 starts so it's not to slow people in advance of the 30.

There is one turning but the 40 zone ends before another turning into the same place.

What it does is remove one of the two overtaking opportunities as you leave Tadcaster since th elimit has to be the same in both directions. The next opportunity is almost at the A64. It is (or was) much easier to pass a HGV as it accelerates out of the 30 than futher along where it has reached it's cruising speed.
