But earlier today - took the Stag out for test drive. I had serviced the old girly girl - und think I've cured that overheat .. she did not blow up on me anyway und was smooth und quieter than littlest kitten in sleep mode.

Was on A road - came out of NSL stretchinto 40 mph strethc und approaching lights at red. Cars were stopped at light already und 400-350 yards checked all mirrors und indicated intention to turn right at these lights und moved into correct position.

baldy locks (mit sunglasses - too dark!) approaches from beind und mit less than 200 yard from lights - decide to overtake me . Ist on wrong side of road und narrowly misses a motorcylist who has truned into this road at those red lights. He then pushes into the front car intending to go straight on at lights.. ist a right numpty. He must be called Richard Edwood Egbert (Dick Ed Humpty Dumpty Numpty! )

Must have been my day for collecting numpites.... At next lights - got the leerer/ I thought he was admiring the sultry sassy looks of the Stag (British Racing Green und in mint condition. He then wound passenger window und leered und asked me if I was capable of driving a sports car. Left him standing at the lights when they changed It was NSL road und no scammers so I a gave her a good work out

Coming nearer to base - drove through village und parked cars were on one side. Cyclist (another bald bloke und in three quarter lycra leggings - no helmet und dark glasses again!) ist ahead und making fair progress.... he ist certainly riding too fast for conditions past row of parked cars. He closes in on car in front und tries to undertake it.... und run in back of it. He has damaged his front bike wheel und has some minor cuts - which I dd put an elastoplast und he was a right wus over it. Anyone would think he was bleeding to death. .. He tried to blame driver (thirty something bloke mit a cute bum) in front for doing emergency stop! Und both he und I pointed out that he had slowed for oncoming car und was passing row of traffic. Fortunately little old lady pedestrian got into act as well.....

You're not serious? How much does the average chap spend on a year's motoring? £3,000? What's a £60 fine in that context? 2% - that's what it is...

And then just think of all those people who choose luxury cars - they are often choosing to pay £10,000 for a year's motoring.

They drive slowly OK - but as rigsy says - seldom use COAST. firnly believing accidents happen to other people Pity we dumb down and not push towards higher skills.

Perhaps part of this PC culture of not failing any tests.... and making excuses for the less able all the time. .

I personally find stereotypes useful so long as people do not take them seriously, or do not assume that all people in that group automatically fall into the definition of the stereotype.

For example rather than saying "Person who works in a sales or marketing capacity whi drives an expensive executive saloon at high speeds in lane 3 of the motorway, tailgating and flashing until other drivers get out of his way, usually while holding a mobile phone conversation" I just say "BMW man".

I'm well aware that plenty of BMWs are driven safely and courteously and that plenty of them are not owned by reps, but the sterotype is pretty well defined and when discussing these topics online, it provides a convinient shorthand.

It's the people who take it any further than that which are the problem, and the people who derail threads with arguments about the merits of generalisation (I've not seen that happen here, but it was endemic in some newsgroups I used to inhabit)

It would be nice if there was a sticky thread with all the common acronyms used here though, particularly COAST which I keep hearing people esposing the great benefits of, yet never see a definition of, rendering the discussion useless to me. What does it stand for, what does it mean and how does it differ from roadcraft and it's derivitaves (eg. IAM)

Yeah I'd go along with that Lum. So long as you treat people/drivers at face value then that's all that matters. It maybe that after meeting them or watching them drive they do indeed fit a stereotype, but that is largely irrelevant.

You have to do some searching, but COAST has been defined in some threads. Knowing it was something to do with IAM I took the easy way out and asked my wife

I've never been taught it except what I've picked up here and got second hand from Mrs Gatsobait, but I think I drive better for being aware of it and trying to put the principles into practice.

Women actually produce testosterone too. A good thing, since without it they would have no sex drive

Sure, men have statistically more accidents than women, but this could just be because they statistically do higher mileages and this brings about both more chances to have accidents, and greater confidence (which leads to higher speeds, more chance-taking etc etc).

Experiments where they've injected people with testosterone and put them behind the wheel prove jack squat, as the excessive amount of the hormone in the bloodstream takes the body outside of it's normal "parameters". They may as well have injected them with ecstasy.

Aye, I've clocked up a few miles this week.

Starting from Wetherby I went to Lyndhurst (near Southampton) on Monday, and did two trips to Andover on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday I was scheduled to go to Exeter, but a changed plan took me to Worthing in West Sussex instead, and then yesterday I had a short hop to Sandy, Bedfordshire.

It was 2850 miles in the five days - no shunts, no near misses, no anxious moments. The only slight irritants were the antics of a few tailgaters, and one or two lane hoggers but it was generally pleasant and enjoyable motoring I thought, and next week looks like following a similar pattern.

actually, per km/mile driven it's about the same. The difference is that men's accidents tend to involve more damage than women's.
