Nicola Dwling reports in "M.E.N":

A 16 year old boy died on the A 57 (near M60 Narton/Eccles and speed cam road) It seems he was cycling near New Lane junction (Red Light cam) when police believe he fell after his front bike wheel hit a deep pothole. (Happened 12.30am). Driver of the car faield to stop (typical  - will be intersting to see if caught on the cam - but somehow... doubt...). Tow passers by went to help the youngster and describedthe car as a dark Vx Astra - they think  Child died a half hour later in Hope Hospital from head injuries (no mention of helmet .. but .. sigh .. who can really say for sure here?) Liverpool Road (A57 ) ws cloesed until 7.30 am this morning whilst police gather forensic evidence.

Anyone with any information about this accident should contact the traffic officer at Area A rRoad Policing Unit on 0161-856 7772 of Crimestoppers on 0800 5555 111.

My thoughts and sympathies to this poor lad's family and if the driver is lurking on this site - get to a police station. Not as bad you may think given the evidence to date.

I've fallen off my bike as a result of poor road maintenance. Luckily there weren't any cars behind me and I was wearing a helmet. I didn't sue, because I'm not that sort of person, but it's amazing how we have roads in such a dangerous condition when we have such a strong compensation culture.

But if the driver had stopped then he would have been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and jailed for 5 years.

Then again, he was probably driving illegally (insurance, registration, drunk, drugged), which would have made it 7 years.

Whichever way you look at it, there is no incentive to stop unless you really have to, which means that your car is immobilised or there were enough witnesses and your car is legal.

I don't suppose that the council will be charged with corporate manslaughter for their deliberate decision to let the state of the road degrade to a dangerous state.
