Quote:
A VILLAGE has finally got its speed camera back, more than three months after it was hacked down.

The fixed camera on the A549 Mold Road, Mynydd Isa, was sawn off its post in an early-morning attack on May 7.

The damage cost thousands of pounds to repair.

Some residents had been left fuming that it was not replaced as quickly as they had hoped, claiming it had put lives at risk at a known accident black spot. The camera was located in a busy part of the village, close to a children’s play area, and local residents have noticed how much of a difference the camera made to speed along the road.

Yesterday the camera was finally put back up.

Local resident Irene Nursaw said: “I’m pleased its been put back;. I just hope nothing like this happens again.

Difference

“I think the camera will make a difference to speed. People come along here and they do drive very fast.”

Another local resident said: “Cars have been racing up and down here; it’s a fast road. The camera was put up yesterday and it has already made a difference in the short time it’s been there. You can see just from the skid marks by it. People have been going past and then realised it’s back. You can see people turning to look.”

One woman said: “It’s been dreadful; cars have been going so quickly. I’ve even found it easier to go back down the road to cross, and then back up it. And you’ve got a children’s playground right there too.”

A spokesman for Flintshire council said: “We are pleased to see the camera back up and hope it has the desired effect on reducing speeds along this road.”

I am sure sudden braking is doing wonders for road safety.

Alternative quote from Flintshire council..."We are pleased to see the camera back up and hope it has the desired effect on increasing income for the SCP.”

:o And that's a good thing? :o You have to worry about the human race when people come out with remarks like this. If that's not evidence for a stupidity gene, I don't know what is.

[pseudoscience]So no accidents actually occured while it was down? This means using advanced statistical methods of road safety engineering, we can prove that removing the camera lead to a 100% reduction in the accident rate compared to the baseline average.[/pseudoscience]

So ....

It's a fast road, and cars have been "racing" along it.
With the camera missing, local residents have had difficulty in crossing the road, electing to go elsewhere.
There's a playground.

And yet the speed camera is the villain of this piece?

Actually, I would have thought it would be easier to cross the road with the speed camera gone, it means the cars won't bunch up near the scamera therefore leaving bigger gaps for people to cross. :)

based on the facts presented that wasn't the case.

If cars are "racing" then surely it is a matter for the local traffic police.

There's a playground.

The speed of vehicles makes no difference to the separation time between them. That sounds like a subjective assertion with no basis in fact.

And, I don't know this road, but if cars are routinely doing well over 30 mph, and it is described as "a fast road", it might suggest that the speed limit is inappropriately low.

I don't know the road either, I am quoting the OP

If people are having difficulty crossing the road then surely the answer is a pedestrian crossing?

I've really lost count of the number of times I've heard people complaining that they have difficulty crossing such-and-such a road 'because the traffic is too fast', when I know full well that it's really the volume of traffic that's the problem on that particular road.

Cheers
Peter

Yeah, what he said, as I said before, its rare for a scamera to make crossing a road easier. :?

Yep, totally agree.

There's hardly anything more annoying than trying to cross a busy road where the traffic slows down just as a gap is about to appear, causing the gap to close up.

The only thing more annoying is being with someone who perches too close to the edge and leans out into the road, thus causing the traffic to slow down...

Not absolutely certain Pete, but think that to get Pedestrian crossing you need to have KSI like case for scam.
We tried to get one on a 20 mph road using kids going to school as arguement and this cropped up.
Great British logic in case of Crossing - wait for evidence.
Pity it wasn't like putting in a scam - "100 residents told us that cars were going too fast" - (Warks smiley quote) ---now we've got 100 new cops.
