Do drivers zooming within 1m of those children at 30mph really deserve a smile and a thumbs up? Wheras if they weren't there, 35 might not be unreasonable.

And just why does that girl have a clipboard?

This sort of emotional blackmail really does get up my nose. TVP did it recently and I ranted at some length about (a) what a cheap and tacky stunt it is to exploit kids this way and (b) what a waste of bloody time it was where TVP tried it - school nearby, check, somewhere to set up, check, road likely to have loads of motorists speeding dangerously, er... :stupidme: .

I'd also suggest that taking road safety advice from children is like asking the cat how to put shelves up. How the hell would they know? Okay, at least the kids would have been primed by the BiBs there to some extent, but as a driver if I'm doing something wrong I want to be told first hand by someone who knows what they're talking about.

And who would be to blame if a lorry mounted the pavement at 20mph (I've seen it happen) and ploughed all those kids into the ground?

The face would still, presumably, be smiling.

Sickening.

Cheers
Peter

What's with the solid white line on each side of the road? Pleeeeze don't tell me that some idiot really believes that's an adequate cycle lane?

Doesn't it just demarcate the edge of the road?

Doesn't that mark the edge of the carriageway for the hard of thinking? Certainly in a funny place. I notice there's a little build out on the right with some plastic bollards on it... hmmm, traffic calming scheme? Wouldn't surprse me, and wouldn't be the only place they've artificially narrowed the road with white carriageway lines when installing traffic calming.

Isn't this the scheme whereby the kids zap you, BiB calls you over and offers you the choice of a NIP or going into the school to apologise to the kids and explain why you were speeding.

Marvellous, int it?

:o On principle I'd tell 'em to stuff it. I'd rather get my cheque book out. If forced to talk to an assembly hall full of kids I'd be quite unable to resist the temptation to explain that they are all likely to become drivers one day and do exactly the same bloody thing.

I suspect it wouldn't go down well.

Oh how much fun could that be?
Schools are for education and you could educate them on the difference between excess speed and inapropriate speed.

If you live near somewhere where they have such a scheme then it might be an idea to have a copy of the arguments against speed cameras from this site with you for your talk.

I guess it must be as you say but the lines look further out than usual.

It's a common cheap trick to make the road appear narrower than it really is. I know a lot of people actually think they are cycle lanes though, in fact someone on the C+ forum thought the same.

Of course, they could have built the pavement out, the one on the other side looks woefully inadequate but that would have meant actually spending some money.

Hmmm... I have an idea toll pavements.

I'd far sooner they made the road look narrower than actually make it narrower. With a narrower road, pedestrians are closer to the firing line, and there's less space to swerve out if the worst happens.

cheers
Peter

I'm sorry, to my mind this is tantamount to child abuse. Filling a childs mind with propaganda, without letting them know the other side of the story, that is brainwashing.
Education is supposed to teach children to be able to make their own decisions, this is not.

Reminds me of the 1960 film Village of the Damned

Based on the book The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham

On the other hand....

But with this gimmick - what exactly are they learning? How to use a speed gun? Will they be able to judge speed as a result? Or will they be lulled into palying chicken if they think i's travelling at 30 mph?

Contrast this with the Salford Board Game thread I placed in the "Chat Forum" - I think it belongs here on reflection though ... I think they've got something useful there and certainly more geared towards getting the right safety message across to kids... how to read a road and judge a safe place to cross a road.

I think they are learning that road risks come from other people. Scares the hell out of me...
