They are owned by Trafficmaster. The are ANPR cameras. The record number plates and track the cars through the various detection points to measure traffic flow. In order to avoid "political" problems they delete the first and last numbers so the information canot be used for law enforcement.

On this vein, is it true that a lot of the motorway cameras measure the highest speed of recent vehicles - I remember on a road rally once, after we'd finished and were in services having had a 5 or 6 mile journey to them, many police came around and said was that you doing XXX mph, to which we said yes and were told don't do that again. Turns out I was probably committing an offence at the time borrowing someone else's car to play with it in the car park, as you still need insurance then (I found out later), but luckily no one asked.

bLUE/GREEN camera = trafficmaster .
Now on a blue curly/wurly pole we have specs - a really nasty bit of stuff.
Now james@speedcam.co.uk has a site showing most types of cameras --

http://www.speedcam.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/index2.htm

this site gives pictures of most types - ( does SS mind )

No, I don't mind in the least. It's all information, and it's information that we need. In fact it's all about information... :)

Some good pictures,

I'm sorry I can’t stop laughing at the camera that's been blown up. Best way, no mess, clean as a whistle.

What i have noticed of late is a sign on the exit to Motorway service areas "Your visit has been recorded on CCTV" --haven't seen any mention of this at the entrance - yet another bit of big brother.Doesn't bother me - but the idea does.

The whole issue of CCTV poses some difficult problems. It is probably true that its use for monitoring traffic flows can contribute positively to road safety. However, it is also used - as per the previous post - to "record your visit" etc. This may well be of good use to the police in crime prevention in general, but the issue of everything you do (CCTV is everywhere in towns) being filmed is worrying.

You CAN take the view that "only those with something to hide" need worry, BUT that assumes one is comfortable with all laws AND have confidence that this and future governments won't abuse the facility.

Taken too far CCTV could have a negative impact on road safety in the same way that scameras do?

I'd be interested in peoples thoughts.

Since many crimes are commited within the family home (child abuse, asault, drug use etc), If you use that argument then you would have no objection to having CCTV in your living room.... :x

I know.....

My reply was to the "general" statement. It is an argument the pro-CCTV and pro-ID card numpties use a lot.

My point in raising the info on CCTV - if we are as free and to be allowed to use our freedom with common sense - so our government tells us - why not have signs informing us of the CCTV and let us vote with our feet, or is that something the pro lobby are frightened of.
Would we have seen the rise in hooded yobs if we had the old beat bobby ??
No much use having a hood if the police are nearby to pick you up.

Shows the flaws in policing by camera -

Now (possibly one for the brainstorm section) -treat crooks like motorists - let the police keep a cut of the fine and be self financing - ?

there is no money to be made chasing real crims.

they all get legal aid
they wont pay up
have no money and never take your word for it.

80% of motorists will confess even if they cant remember speeding. THAT is why we have so many scams. same as people following smokers waiting to fine them if they drop their buts.
