WEST Cumbria’s first pair of fixed speed cameras are expected to go live towards the end of next month.
They are being placed alongside the A595 at Howgate, an acknowledged accident blackspot where the speed limit is 40mph. Posts have already been put up and markings painted on the road – but the cameras have still to be fitted and power installed.
The £45,000 cameras are going up after five accidents at Howgate in the past three years in which people have been killed or injured.
They are being funded through the Cumbria Safety Cameras scheme, a partnership between the police, county council, highways agency and courts service.
Three other fixed cameras are being placed in the south of the county.
n Safety cameras will be watching motorists on the following roads from today: A6, B5305; Tuesday: A596, A595, C1036, C6010, C6012; Wednesday: A590, A5087, A595; Thursday: M6, A66, A6; Friday: A5086, A66, A595, A66; Saturday: A590, A65, A6; Sunday: A66, A6, A686
