Now having just seen and heard one of the bearded brigade - either Green party or "Friends ?? of the earth" wittter on about aviation costs/fuel etc/etc, might i make a small suggsstion - how abut a new tax on sandals and an extra large one on pulses( lentils etc), as when eaten this food stuff produces a large amount of greenhous gas ( at both ends)

There's loads of places in the US that are better than florida. I have worked there and have traveled a bit in the usa and feel qualified to tell you there much more to america than blue rised floridians. Cornwall is much better too. Now, where are me keys I need a paper...

from my old history lessons i recall that the reason there is no tax on aviation fuel is that the yanks (after having had to pop over to help out with two european wars :D) decided to encourage european integration by encouraging air travel hence no tax.......

Yes! Amazing isn't how everytime the report begins: This was the worst storm/rains/heatwave since 18/19**. Is our weather getting worse due to global warming?

Duh! No - it was worse in 18** wasn't it.

Possibly due to the conferences on it, spouting lots of hot air, or the effect on the atmosphere of too many lentils being eaten

If I could just stir this up by paralelling it with the debate on biodiesel and bioethanol, these two fuels prove automobiles do not require fossil fuels (in fact the first diesel engine was designed to run on peanut oil). engine oil and most lubricants can be produced synthetically as well.

therefore, mans only real need for fossil fuels is aviation. funny how car drivers are paying enviromental penaltys on a product they don't need but is forced on us to subsidise the aviations fuel bill as it's a by-product of oil refinary, yet the aviation industry itself is pretty much exempt.

Nope. One of the major advantages of the gas turbine engine is that it can run on any old gunk if needed, much, much more readily than a reciprocating piston engine can.

I know a lot of the russian jets can, thought our fancy western engines were more fussy though. but good point, fundamentally they can, so do we have a need for fossil fuels at all? I assume there's no readily avaliable alternative for high grade kerosene so all our military planes would be a bit slower? plus airliners on lower grade fuel would be slower/less powerfull/able to carry less?
