Hello new to forum so hello everyone.right down to what my problem is.i was heading into dorchester and anyone who knows the dorchester to yeovil road will know that its a great 10 mile piece of road.anyway i was going up the big hill towards clay pigeon and flash flash.what has pi~~ed me off is that there where no warning no signs and i was coming off the top of the hill and its two lanes that go into one.its was 9:45 at ngt there was nobody around and i was in total control of my car yet i will get 3 points and a £60 fine for it.i was doing 76 in what i think it a 60 zone and i know i was speeding but at the end of the day i was cruising long in 5th gear and i cant see how im going to cause anyone any harm its just a road and a load of fields.the van was pulled into a lay by and it was pitch black,it had a small marking on it the size of a football and had no reflectors on it at all.i know this because i went back to have a look as i couldnt see where the flash had came from.it this type of policing that gets me really pi~~ed off.i now have this speeding fine on my license for two years so another smack in the face.if i had got caught in the town centre doing 45 in a 30 then fair enough but anyone who knows this road will tell u that there are no houses for miles.i would love to go to court and try and change the fine and points but i know i dont have a chance.i had little faith in the police and now i have none.any comments welcome good or bad.thanks stefan

spike. Welcome to the forum. This won't help with this conviction as it seems like you've already had it added to your licence, but for future reference check out http://www.pepipoo.com/ for legal advice and stuff.

Was it a dual carriageway (see thread 'what is a dual carriageway') or a single carriageway and were there any speed limit repeaters on the road?

The Yeovil Dorchester road crosses from Somerset to Dorset.

One question - which county is prosecuting you? Just wanted to know which pratnership is operating at night now?

Dorset scammers have a portable gatso. This is a "highly visible" black box on a black tripod. And unlike lasers, it flashes. I have seen them use it in the dark. (it had a small green light on) In their minutes a few months ago they were discussing the possibility of using lasers at night, but I haven't read any more on this.
They have also been "doing" the A37 quite a bit recently.

Was there any other visible presence nearby? If not a complaint to the DFT is in order I think.

This was a long time ago. The white van with amber lights and their yellow logo was parked near it. I dare say it was almost visible from 60 metres if you were in the outside lane. It may even have had some reflective shevrons on the back. There's also a camera sign on a pole within 1km.
If I hadn't been looking for it (I knew they left it there) I could easilly have missed it, or not realised what it was. Luckly I was looking and didn't leave skid marks.

If there had been no other presence it might not have stayed there.

i havent had points added or fine yet but i know i will.i went over road again 2day and at top of the other side of the hill there is a 60mph sign but......when u come down and back over other side it goes into three lines.there are no speed signs and the going over the top line goes into two lines with other side of road single line with broken white lines to overtake coming DOWN the hill its also on a left curve so u cant see around bend going up the hill.crazy.its called death valley and i can see y.the trap should have been set half way up the hill to save lives but no, put in top of hill just to catch people speeding."It may even have had some reflective shevrons on the back. There's also a camera sign on a pole within 1km".the van was whites with NO reflective anything.the only problem i may have is that there are the speed camera signs along the road but i dont think theres one within 1km of where i got caught.i know someone else who got flashed yesterday in same place and the white van was again in lay be BEHIND a hegde.i will know next time to go under 60 to not get caught but will this trap save any lives????.nope

The front page has a link (updated on mondays) to a list of the week's mobile sites. This week includes A37 Holywell Cross.

Last week (20th September to 26th September 2005) they were doing A37 Wardon Hill and A37 Long Cross, Shaftesbury

The 2 weeks before that (31st August to 12th September 2005) they were doing A37 Long Ash Lane and A37 Staggs Folly.

If they wanted to slow people down they'd put up proper warning signs and make the camera visible.

I just happened to find a picture of the portable gatso in use on the A37:
http://www.speedcam.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/van96.jpg

It's the little black box almost dead center in the photo under the sign. Highly Visible my bottom.

There's some better pictures on the web site I found that on, here: http://www.speedcam.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/van3.htm (note the yellow one used in Essex at the top...)
