Popping this in here as it's more "Chat" than speed cam news

Teenagers Snared By Decoy Car

Bolton Evening News – Edward Chadwick reports

Two Bolton teenagers have become the first to be caught by a decoy car set up to trap thieves. The Vx Cavalier was parked by police at car crime hot spot, and then they positioned themselves nearby and watched as the lads broke into the car and looked for valuables to steal.

The officers could have locked them :D in the car via computer controls operated by unmarked car just yards away and arrested them. But they decided to wait and see if they’d return to steal the car.

The pair did not return but were identified by CCTV camera near a council estate.

Seems to have cost a lot of valuable resources on this one. Why not patrol and protect people's cars in their driveways instead? :?

Quote:

The decoy cars were introduced in June 2004. Thieves who try to steal one are monitored by police who can use a laptop computer to lock the car doors by remote before stopping the car’s engine

Sgt Jacobs said: ”We can fit this technology to any car and criminals need to be aware that if they are considering stealing a car, they could end up locked inside it and then be arrested.”

Dunno about others – but somehow this reads to me as a waste of resources. Those lads should have been arrested whilst stealing from the car. My sister lives down in that area and some of her neighbour’s cars have been broken into whilst in the driveways – and no patrols watching such obvious hot spots for theft and burglary.

However, maps and Wildy’s chocolate stash    are the only items you may find inside the saloon of our cars. Everything else is locked inside the boot and all valuables are taken to fairly safe place inside the house and car gets stabled in nice cosy garage.

The flaw here is I think "entrapment" (possibly) and the lack of an actual offence until they are back out of the vehicle with any content. Until then it's only trespass isn't it - unless they do damage getting in (when it becomes breaking & entering) - or have I missed the point?

Don't get me wron, I want the scumbags that break into and either steal from, steal or destroy other people's property to be hounded down like dogs and the maximum punishment that the law will allow meted out to them (or probably more if truth be known). Not sure how to do it though.

When will the police ever do something that doesnt attract criticism from one place or another. Damned if they do and damned if they don't.

I didn't read Rogers post as a criticism, just concern that the scroats might get off!!

For myself, I see vehicle theft and vandalism as something akin to robbing old ladies at knife point. They deserve everything they get.
Am I alone in feeling that when some TWOC'er runs out of road and dies, it's the family you should feel sorry for? :( It's just another form of suicide, which causes all sorts of work for others.

Yes, I think you're right. There's a strong connection.

I certainly was not intending to be critical, Stephen, more sympathetic. I was vindicating the call not to fire the laptop button as, to have done so, would have almost certainly let them off the hook and swung the tide of opinion against you.

I really don't know what the answer is.

Wish it was more like the "advert" in the robocop film- the one where the car thief breaks in and settles into the driving seat, whereupon steel retaining bands fix him in place prior to him getting 20 gazillion volts....

The 'entrapment' argument is a load of old shite, the little bastards have no right to be in your motor in the first place.

As far as I'm concerned, anybody does me (or my family) a wrong, and they better hope to god the old bill find them before I do.
