So there I was, driving along -- as you do. And out of the blue, around a corner, amother cam damera. Problem was that I was on a dual carriageway and had no idea what the limit was. Don't get me wrong, I was driving safely, I had just not seen a speed limit sign in ages.... since I was doing about 65 or so I felt that I had little choice but to slow down to 40, and quickly since it was hidden so well. The guy behind me did not like that one bit, came within inches of destroying my car (and his and possibly both of us.)

I suggest that the limits should be clearly posted on the camera -- right on the yellow!

Ideally, if there are to be any cameras at all, they should all have a specific advance warning sign rather like this:

However, there aren't that many speed limits that aren't clear (and those that aren't are generally 30s in areas you wouldn't expect them). Perhaps you need to study the signing regs a bit more.

Basically, unless there are repeaters saying differently, if there are street lights, it's a 30, if there are no street lights it's a 60 if a single carriageway, 70 if dual.

Why 40? It's much more likely that it would be a 30 zone.

40 and 50 zones should have repeaters and it's unlikely you would have gone a great distance without seeing one.

So it was either a 70, in which case you had no need to brake or a 30 in which case you were still over the prosecution threshold.

Can't say I have a lot of sympathy for the 'didn't know the limit' excuse. Most scamera sites get a rash of shiny new signs to go with them and in any case it's something you really should know.

Homer, you obviously haven't had a speeding ticket yet.
The day you do, you will become paranoid, and strat doubting even the most obvious things.
That's the damage speed cameras are doing to us.

You could go one further and criticise the old national speed limit rule. The one where it's a sixty if it's not a built up area, 30 if it is. But to determine whether it's built up or not you need to judge the distance between lamp posts.

I'm sure I'll be repeating someone when I say "Why not just put up 60 or 30 signs!!"

I havn't had one for a looong time but I did once have 10 points on my license and this was in the pre-scam era. Two 3's for speeding and a 4 for Due care. All done in pretty low powered cars, (the fastest was a 1.4 Strada), all gained within a year. Certainly taught me to know the limit.

I was young and stupid, the first speeding and the due care, I deserved. The last speeding was some copper looking to get the first booking of the day, I came over the brow of the hill at 1 min past midnight.

The entirely sensible thinking behind this was that, since the vast majority of lit roads were urban and with 30 limits, and the vast majority of unlit roads were rural and NSL, it greatly reduces the number of repeaters required. If you had to sign all the limits you would need millions of repeaters.

Obviously this is becoming less true as councils such as Oxfordshire decide to make 50 the NSL in their areas. Well, at least for classified routes. Tiny country lanes are still 60 :?

I have recently seen a growing number of small blue-backed 30 repeater signs with a camera logo, generally placed where there is actually a camera. I might not be happy with the camera being there, but if it is the sign seems very sensible.

Oxfordshire are making NSL 50? I thought it was 30 after going along the A329 from Thame to the M40 in January. There are no houses, but bends that had an advisory 35, now greyed out as 35 is speeding! when you finally get to some houses it goes back the NSL. silly. the reason why the limit was low was due to an uneven surface, though the surface was fine and the 30 repeaters looked permanant, dispite it being a supposidly temporary limit.

What makes it more unacceptable is that I then turned onto the A40, which had a much worse surface, National Speed Limit, and was still in Oxon.

Oxon is stupid in terms of limits, no wonder TVSCP have field days with limits like this!

Simon

Try Lancs - they just love reducing dual carriageways from NSL, 50 and 40 mph down to 30 mph and wahcking up a scam to enforce!

Article in question said that there are "no speed limits on rural roads" :?

Odd? Where we live - rural roads and NSL applies on many of them -- (not that it is always appropriate - tis limit and not target after all! )

NSL sign on continent seems lot more straightforward than here for vehicles limited to different speeds - the black diagonal is borken and depicts both car and lorry to indicate two tier limit according to vehicle. Now what a good idea for the A66 single carriageway which is NSL - has overtaking lanes and cops lot of people who think "dual carriageway and thus 70mph" when it is really city because there is no central barrier between the pseudo-dual carriageway!

The logic and general driving standard over there - tarnations - I have to say it - much better than here - and yet their stats overall would give different impression !

Try applying COAST - spelled out on the forum by self and In-Gear on here! Also given airing by my wife on PH and gather it is now on the Cumbrian SCP site as well! Not telling you which thread - up to you to browse!

Have another read of HC and "Know Your Road Signs"

Where do you live?

A14 (Cambs) road chockablock with Truvelos - which has slowed traffic down - at the scam sites where they bunch and rear end shunts tend to be normal - but other than that - road still prone to more serious smashes due to sudden fog and the odd pedestrian crossing an NSL dual carriageway!

In fairness to Cambs - (and Northants and Suffolk stretches of this road - there is warning sign and reminder that it is NSL.

Even LanCASH£re posts speed limit with scam warning sign thses days and parts of Manchester even have Smiley Sid neon lights! A2 hides them and does not always show the 50mph sign according to reports from this mob down there (I-G has checked it out  and found this to be case).

Parts of A55 do not have very many NSL repeaters either - yet road at this stretch indeed NSL  If you look hard - you do see very small NSL sign near scam warning sign around exit of Conwy Tunnel (which is advisory 50mph and rightly so - should always lower speed in tunnels - Southwards. In fairness to Dick - would agree that the one on the other side policing the 30mph is enforcing a dangerous site and justifiable on that basis (See Dicky- who probably lurks here! - will acknowledge if you "done well" which ain't often! !) and driving out of Colwyn Bay 40mph repeaters are very badly faded and unreadable - and all the scam warning signs are nice and shiny -- about right for Dick Ed  Oi Dick - if you're lurkin' do summat about those - you could find victims might challenge tickets as "speed limit is not clear" and you miss out on your "criminals caught figures diddling"!
