The future of motorsport at the historic Italian race circuit at Monza near Milan has been thrown into doubt by a court ruling stating that cars competing in any future events at the venue, including the Formula One Italian Grand Prix, must be fitted with silencers.

Judge Marco Manunta upheld a complaint by residents of the town of Biassono, which lies adjacent to Monza track, who said their lives had been transformed into a living hell by the roaring of racing car engines at the circuit. A court order, issued earlier this week, banned all motor sport activities at Monza which involved "the use of vehicles not fitted with an appropriate silencing system".

A report in the La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper quoted the judge as saying motor racing was a "superfluous, dangerous and socially useless activity that had a major impact on the environment".

The report also said that track’s management, which operates the circuit on behalf of its owners, the municipalities of Monza and Milan, would appeal against the ruling.

Riccardo De Corato, the deputy mayor of Milan said, "It is right to protect the environment but it is also right that we should avoid excesses that might wipe out important traditions."

Let me change this slightly to see how it fits:

"... football matches are superfluous, dangerous and socially useless activities that have a major impact on the environment due to all the travelling involved by spectators and teams."

unfortunately these people succeed all too often in their complaints. The pub-band in Sydney is just about dead due to all the people who move next door to existing venues - buying at a bargain price - and then successfully complaining about the noise - thus doubling their house price overnight. How or why the courts let them get away with it is beyond me.
