Heard this question asked on the local radio today, part of an advertising campaign by the Lancashire Pratnership for Road Safety.

That was the exact question, honestly!

Strangely enough, I was driving along the A6 into Preston at the time - dual carriageway, NSL, becomes dual carriageway 50mph, becomes dual carriageway 30mph nearer the City Centre.

Yesterday they asked "what is the speed limit on a rural road?". Now would that happen to be a dual carriageway?
Is there a legal definition of rural road?

What utter drivel these people talk. They'll be trying to convince us chopping your own leg off is worth it to loose weight next

To be honest though, it is annoying that there are a lot of people who don't know what the NSLs are.

A good example is at a time when I was driving on the A14 through Cambridgeshire. I was following this car and we were both doing about 80ish, but then when we came up to a camera the car in front slammed on the brakes down to 60 :x

(Although interestingly, I keep hearing that this part of the A14 is actually going to have its speed limit cut to 60 soon)

But I do agree that from that, the Lancs SCP don't even seem to know what their talking about.

Though the powers that be don't exactly help.
Take the A1 going north from where it stops being the A1M at Baldock -
think its round about Sandy, or just before ,the limit changes to 60 - fair enough there are a few junctions/houses etc. Slightly further north the limit changes to 50 with no discernable change in hazards/county /local authority ( that i could see), in fact i felt that the 60 area could warrant a 50, then for no apparent reason it changes back to NSL and a little further up with no houses etc back to 50 .

I'll second that

Today's question was "what is the speed limit in a built up area?"

The M8 runs through the middle of Glasgow doesnt it?

The mind boggles what their next question will be :o

This is a very relevant question in Cumbria

There were 26 deaths in 39 months at camera sites before CSCP started, 25 deaths in 27 months (to 30/6/05) after they started from figures obtained under the FOI Act (ie what they wouldnt have told us otherwise  )

There have been deaths since the end of June as well - I will be sending another FOI request early January to get the total for 2005 - it wont make good reading for CSCP.

Was very tongue in cheek after reading my local scp site - (warks) where no mention was given to safety.Strange that on a SAFETY CAMERA PARTNERSHIP site the word "safety" is ommitted.

Does this tell us somat??

I welcome any radio campaign that attempts to tell people what the speed limit on dual carriageways and NSL rural single carriageways is.

Too many people sit at 60 in the outside lane on dualies, and 50 on singles, beleive that to to be the speed limit, and since it's only 10 under, it's hard to overtake them legally and safely. (And then you do, you get agressive flashing and tailgating, especially from drivers of old Jags who have just been overtaken by my shitty L reg diesel estate, less so if I overtake them in the Scooby)

Can we have "Is your capable of doing more than 40mph?" in the next radio slot please? or maybe "What does a hatched ares with broken lines mean?"

Surely the answer is whatever their lollipop says it is.

Especially in LanCASH£££££££re where road safety plays second fiddle to making cash from blippers.
