They work very well indeed.
Would not say Beatles songs are "forgettable" as they do spring into mind and you just know them as you sing them - almost like traditional pieces. Some of the pieces are actually quite complex musically.
Some of the Abba stuff needs more rehearsals before we get it right - but then some of the notes were designed for those girls!

As for what I was doing when the word broke... was on duty in London - was in the Met in those days. Some of the older officers had been on duty in the heady days of Beatlemania and reminisced over theier experiences. Most of these seniors at teh time seemed, as I recall, to have fairly pleasant memories of policing fans and assisting the Beatles to dodge them
Everyone was shocked to hear of the senseless murder - had he died in cross fire of some other crime, or been run over or died as result of substance abuse - different. But this was a deleiberate act of murder by a deranged fan - and a shock.
Also - I seem to recall his death being 8 December - New York Time and early hours of 9 December - GMT - so like the late Diana - lot of people heard this on the radio as they woke up in the morning. I think this also has a lot to do with impact of these deaths on general public - whether fans or not.
As for my fave Lennon/Beatles song? "Woman" "Jealous Guy" and perhaps "I'm Only Sleeping" "Day Tripper" "Mr Kite" and "Nowhere Man" "She Said She Said"
