With massive costs and "marginal" profit turned in by some scamera operators we can look forward to some MAJOR cut-backs in their operations....

cost of a camera = cost of one policeman. You do the maths when the public are calling for visible police presence.

It will be interesting to see how the money is divided over the authorities. I suspect there will be a lot of losers.

My point exactly.....

I can see a gradual winding up of camera enforcement.

You spend the money on road improvements, you spend it once. Cameras are a money pit.

Also I presume Durham will get a slice of the cake. This will take more money out of the scheme.

If, as we are led to believe that ALL funds are going to be spent on 'safety' improvements, where does that leave operating costs I wonder?

AIUI the £110m is a road safety grant to local authorities and is not linked in any way to fine revenue.

Yup - so we go back to the pre netting-off days.

This could go all sorts of ways. The message seems to still be that slower speeds are better, but the camera isn't the way to do it (8% reduction at best, and they don't even want to do a scientific test to see if that is true). I can't see though how they can legitimately (morally?!) link camera enforcement to spending on other measures now as it would be a blatant demonstration that camera enforcement is purely about raising revenue.

No - I suspect the scheme will be wound down and the proposed 'grant' will be the last great camera cash spend.

In the longer term their message will stay the same and we'll soon be facing some other speed restricting method along with its pitfalls....
