Do the same rules apply to roadwork traffic lights as ordinary ones? i.e. can you drive through roadwork lights if you can see it is safe to do so?

No, with roadwork traffic lights red doesn't mean stop until it's been on for at least 5 seconds!
Hehe only kidding but that's how they seem to work.

I have wondered though, if normal traffic lights control the white line what do roadwork lights control? I guess the red "If red light shows wait HERE" sign?
On normal lights no white line = no need to pay attention to the lights...
Talking legally here of course.

Roadwork lights do seem to be getting better with their sensors these days. They've even discovered radio controlled ones so no more wires across the road! They had these in France more than 10 years ago...

Yes. The same can happen with fixed lights though.

If I designed traffic lights they would detect faults and if broken turn them selves off. Or something. They would also turn on to flashing amber at night when lights are not needed! (grrr)

Well up here stuck on red is a good failure, we had three signal heads stolen by students over a weekend!

We spent more on replacing stolen signs then we did on white lining for the completed scheme!
