Have a look at the edits against Monbiot's entry on Wikipedia - there is a continual fight of people putting in information about his family history and it being removed, as if people are trying to scrub it out - somebody helpfully pointed this out in the "discussion" pages. This edit was probably removed because it was too wordy, but the essence was put into a later edit and removed again:

edit: Also here are two dissections of this article:

I think the letter is good. It's sharp and to-the-point. Increasing it in length would be counterporductive IMHO - unless you get a full article space. I'm likely too late to make any meaningful comment anyhow. Pater says it tails off. Perhaps it does, but the pint you end on is the right one to end on. Maybe swapping the last two sentences around and a small pop at the DfT will give it the lift?

But George did get one thing right. Safe Speed does claim that speed cameras make the roads more dangerous. Two weeks ago the Institute of Advanced Motorists president, John Maxwell, said: "Speed cameras are continuing to damage road safety." I am certain this is the case. So are the government, but they haven't yet had the grace to admit it.

Letters to the Guardian on the subject here (no letter from Paul - did you get one sent in in time?):

An interesting mixture of views - and not all in favour of Monbiot. Two letters in particular pointing out deficiencies of cameras as identified here. I think we can safely ignore the smart-ass one-line letter at the end.
