NORTH Wales police plan to use their speed camera vans at night.

Special camera lenses are being tested so the nine "Arrive Alive" vans can operate in the dark.

They will be able to diffuse a car's headlights or rear lights to produce a proper image of the number plate and hopefully the driver.

Anti-speed officials last night denied the move, due to be introduced in the next few weeks, was designed to recoup any cash lost by the government clamp-down on increasing the number of fixed cameras

Arrive Alive "partnership" project manager Inspector Essi Ahari said: "It's not to do with money.

"We've not had an increase in cameras in two years."

Mr Ahari said the night-time cameras were specifically aimed at slashing the number of road tragedies involving youngsters, typically aged between 17 and 24.

"Boy and girl racers are the ones we are going to target," added the inspector.

"I think it's a great move. I'm determined to be there late at night to catch them."

He said Arrive Alive was anxious to reduce further deaths and serious injuries.

On top of the personal tragedies it was estimated that one death cost £1.3m and a serious injury more than £150,000.

In just one year 75,000 drivers were fined and handed points for speeding in North Wales, equivalent to the population of Anglesey.

Fines totalled £4.5m and in some months as many as 8,000 speeding motorists were caught.

But a spokesman for the People for Proper Policing pressure group was last night sceptical about the latest development.

Llandudno businessman Arthur Roberts said: "If boy racers are to be the target we applaud that as highly commendable.

"But we fear that other motorists doing just 35mph will be targeted too. It is dreadful for police relations with the public."

I was thinking about this tonight when driving home. As I passed under one of the South Wales scammers favourite spot (Bridge J36) I was musing what effect that van (that usually sits there) would have in the dark (thinking about Mr Callaghans ascertion that their vans worked in the dark). I imagined chaos, panic breaking, locking wheels mainly due to seeing the van very late (ie worse than in the day).

Does anyone reckon it would cause serene, passive lanes all travelling at 70 or under?

I reckon ArriveAlive will be sending NIPs to the recently deceased in fairly short time if this goes ahead.

yes mobile cameras are able to be used during darkness, the headlights and street lighting provide enough light to read the number plates, as a camera operator i can work any 10 hour shift period that is required.

flashing headlights make it easier to read the number plate due to the incresase / decrease/ increase of light

nothing new at all the above i beleive was one of my first posts, but we are talking about north wales, they are having televisions next year

I wonder if Wales still has a 'driving tourist' industry? I know I'll never willingly enter into that part of the country. Here's an amusing bio on Mr.Brunstrom!! I found :P

Would a mobile camera operating on an unlit road emit some sort of telltale infrared light, or would you have no chance of seeing it at all?

Some time ago a bright spark in police HQ advocated using an empty council flat as a police contact point - till the local beat officer pointd out the responsibilities his employer bore under HSE rules. The idea was scrapped.
A van in the wilds of wales - is that the wind , or is it the wheels coming off?

What a load of toss. How the hell would a camera operator be able to estimate the age of a driver of a car 100m away in the dark?

This type of enforcement is, by its very nature, indescriminate. For every "racer" that gets prosecuted, there will be at least 50 law-abiding drivers that get done for 35 in a 30, 57 in a 50 etc. just because they have quite correctly adjusted their speed according to the lower hazard density at night.

I can see taxi drivers bearing the brunt of this assault. In town centres there is a glut of taxis on the road at 2AM and the scammers will take full advantage of this. The raft of prosecutions and higher insurance costs the taxi firms face will be passed on as higher fares, which in turn will encourage more people to risk drink-driving. Nice one.

i live in essex and i was traveling down the M11. just before it goes doown to the 50mph limit (yeah the one with the speed camera) there was a speed camera van (side window etc) on the bridge just before the limit change.

Now this wouldnt seem too unusual to me, apart from the fact it was 2am on a weekday night. I was probably doing about 85-90mph as i approached the bridge but the van was parked on the other side looking at cars driving away into the 50 limit.

I make more effort to look at the bridges now in the dark. hang on shouldnt i be looking at the road?

Tim

With a general shift away from low margin high cost fixed cameras to high margin mobile cameras I wonder how long before one gets petrol bombed. Even more vulnerable at night.

I can see the headlines 'BBQ pork tonight'

Obviously given where some of these toerags choose to park, there may well be a RTA as a result.

Many of the limits not are enforceable at night - if they are not properly illuminated.

Hmm...

If they rely on your own car's lights to illuminate your numberplate then all you have to do is turn them off! :)
Safe.

Maybe the new filter they've developed will 'filter' out anyone over 24?

An employer has to may provsion for lone workers under H&S regs. A scammer in a van all alone on a cold wet windy evening must be fairly vulnerable.

They are just asking to get "done over". :( Chavmobile with four happy chappies gets pinged miles from anywhere in the dark... I wouldn't want to be the poor sod in the van if they decided to "stop and have a word with me"!

Safe.

They will no doubt use infrared illumination just like SPECS does. Most scam vans are set up to snap your front numberplate, which has no lighting anyway.

Passed a scammer enforcing at night in south wales on sunday. Couldn't believe my eyes, I had to put main beam on to be sure what it was........hope he wasn't too dazzled whilst peeping down his scope.

On a more worrying note I was driving last night, A449 I think, only to be caught in a major mass braking frenzy. Very very dangerous occurance only to find that everyone was panic braking for the AA van on the side of the road!!!!!
