They get enough crap to deal with from people sitting on the 9 button without it dialing out every time someone in the car says "Police" or whatever.

perhaps, just perhaps, you'd select something a little different for the voice command. I don't know, how about "Police 999"? How likely would you be to say that? or "dial police 999"???

Botach: "But - the law says you should not touch a button - not put the phone to your ear ---how do you do that with an earpiece??"

Actually it says that you can touch the buttons - all the buttons you want but you cannot HOLD the phone, i.e. it must be in a cradle, can pick those up for a fiver in Halfords will clip to air vent or stick to dash.

Current set up is a cradle with phone in it connected to charging lead and a bluetooth headset (Jabra 250, very good can voice dial and very good call quality on par or better than an installed kit as the sound is in the ear not competing withroad noise and it's only £35-00).

Nobody is talking about calling the police using voice activated dialling, please try to follow the thread.

In (part) answer to your statement though, YOU teach the mobile how YOU pronounce words and it then responds accordingly (so even those with speech impediments can use voice dial).

Silly question why not just hit 999 it overrides the key lock on most phones some of the old ericssons if you held nine down it automatically dialled 999.

It's not pushing buttons on the phone that is illegal it's holding the phone and if the phone is in a cradle or car kit and it is to dangerous to push the button, don't make the call !!

Why bugger about with vox dialling ???

besides, if you're dialling 999 then by definition its an emergency, and you CAN legally use a handheld phone in an emergency....

Only if it is in response to a genuine emergency and is "unsafe or impracticable" to ceace driving to make the call. (Sais me who was just reading the 'silly' law in question :) )
