can anyone advise me if the mechancal cameras at the side of the wrong not being allow to flash facing towards you, applies to the speeding vans? I was doing 50mph in a 40mph and was overtaking a big lorry before i had chance to see the van. but if he did catch me, the photo would have been of the front og the car, including my face, is this not illegal?

It's legal, and their preferred method of operation so they can send you a pic of your smiling face.

If you receive a NIP you're best to take it over to www.pepipoo.com when it arrives. Don't do anything until you have a read of the forums over there.

I assume you're talking about a GATSO (grey or yellow box on a pole) covering the opposite carriageway?
They are triggered by either a radar beam or an under-the-road induction loop, covering a specific section of road, so being on the other side of the road shouldn't trigger them.

(Light bulb comes on above head- so, if I'm coming up to a GATSO and there are no oncoming vehicles, what happens if I drive on the wrong side of the road........)

I'm not sure about forward-facing Truvelos.

Because the flash could be distracting. The van does not emit a flash.

However, Truvelo cameras do flash front-facing but the light will be magenta so it won't cause any undue dazzle or discomfort. (yeah, right.)

I believe the radar 'beam' is quite wide, enough to cover two lanes anyway. That or it is narrow and fired at an angle covering both lanes. They are used on two lane dual carageways so the side of the road you are on makes no difference. Unless of course you can get over far enough to be out of the beam. (4 lanes maybe? :) )

I read somewhere that all speed registration devices except hand-helds must only monitor one direction at once.

Bum!
Anyone out there know a 4-lane carriageway with a single GATSO?

The nearest to that description I know is the Oakdale traffic lights in Poole, 2 lanes in one direction, 2 in the other, one (non-reflective) camera, 'calibration' lines painted on 3 of the 4 lanes. I have yet to test it though. :)

Assuming you are really a 'biker', what do you care for front-facing photography anyway?

Whoops...

When I'm out on my bike, I regularly set off cashcams on the opposite carriageway... Don't know why...

The 'x' button at the top right of your own posts allows deletion. The 'edit' button next to it allows, well, editing.
