Years ago a number used to be stamped on the frame, just under the saddle - has this stopped?

as I said... although its location may vary. On my bike it's on one of the dropouts.

That serial number is still there but it isn't easy to check; that does
restrict its effectiveness.

An always visible easy-to-read Registration Plate would be a more
substantial anti-theft deterrent. It wouldn't stop serious criminals but it
would obstruct the riff-raff. It works in the USA so, if there were police
about, it would work here.

If you do a Google-search you will see how widespread bicycle-
registration is in the US. In some places it's compulsory and in others
it's voluntary. And in some cities the scheme involves Number Plates or
stickers. And yes, some places have simple registration schemes
without Plates.

But the States are quite different - hell, if you walk you get shouted at!!

Hah! I got fined when aged 14 years for crossing a road in Switzerland. My Swiss cousins got hammered by their respective parents over it as they were suppsed to be "looking after me as guest" at the time. Fine was about £30 and in those days a LOT of money. (am - er - er... gulp .. can handle it.. am a big boy.. .. well I will not see 50 again .. )
