Quote:
About 700 motorists have mistakenly been issued with three speeding tickets for the same offence.

Leicestershire County Council's road safety unit blamed the error on computer problems.

The duplicate notices were sent out when drivers were caught on speed cameras around the county.

Staff today urged those motorists affected to respond to only one of the tickets and disregard the other two. Judith Pashley, 40, from Old Dalby, near Melton, was one of the motorists who received three tickets after a camera snapped her doing 40mph on a road with a 30mph limit, at Kegworth.

She said: "I got two tickets on January 24 and then I was astounded to get another one the following day.

"I phoned the road safety unit to complain and they said it had happened to hundreds of people. It doesn't bear thinking about how much taxpayer's money has been wasted.

"I am not contesting breaking the speed limit, but I have written a letter of complaint to them because I was worried I was going to be prosecuted three times."

Road safety unit spokesperson Hema Ladd said: "Approximately 700 people have received three speeding tickets for the same offence. Our staff have been taking calls from the public and we have been reassuring them.

"It was a technical problem involving a printer and we sorted it out as soon as it was discovered.

"We are really sorry people have got more than one notice of prosecution for the same offence.

"We can assure people they will not be prosecuted more than once."

I thought NIPs had to be signed before they went out.
