Each to his own. As a Neo-puritan, I’m not averse to doing things properly, but those words are too egotistic for me. Somehow “verve or panache” implies a public performance of a skill, rather than the skill itself, and we’ve quite enough show-offs already!

I didn't intend to imply that. I thought I'd chosen excellent words. But...

The OED has:

verve: Enthusiasm, vigour, or spirit, esp. in artistic or literary work or in sport; style, energy.

panache: Flamboyantly or stylishly confident behaviour; a manner marked by this.

I wasn't really aware of the 'flamboyantly' aspect of panache. I'm comfortable with the rest.

Ahh, so you DO recognise that good driving has to be described in qualitative rather than quantitative terms.

Do you finally recognise that the quality of driving depends on how satisfied stakeholders are with the outcomes of driving, not just on an individual’s view?

Yes, Jeremy Clownson could be described as 'flamboyant' couldn't he?

Do you think? Is it possible to be flamboyant in a yobish way?

Seeing as this is clearly semantic Thursday, what exactly do you mean by stakeholders?

I split basingwerk's comprehensive reply to the 'stakeholders' question to a new topic: http://www.safespeed.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5853

As a NCO I was told to lead by example, so perhaps a gentleman driver driving with verve and panache might not be seen as a show off but as leading by example ???

BTW - whats this 'drive gently' bollox?

With respect, I don't think it is bollox, as you put it.

I normally drive very gently, but most of the time it is far from slow.

It is quite feasible to be very quick, and gentle, which I think is the best way. You may care to think about that a bit, and maybe try it yourself - well certainly the gentle bit.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Basingwerk, your primary success metric to measure the success of the speeding laws is:

It is actually the reduction in speed, and the corresponding increase in safety, of course.

increase in safety is an interesting critical success factor......but how do you measure it?
