I would have thought that the location where a friend or relative has died in a horrific manner is the last place you would want a lasting memorial. This suggests they are (rightly or wrongly) doing it to try to prevent it happening to someone else, or perhaps this is being done on their behalf.

As for whether there is any benefit, I guess it depends how it's done. Over the last few years there have been a lot on Princess Parkway going into Manchester (off the end of the M56). They can serve as a reminder to take extra care, as you are passing residential areas.

In Greece (and probably elsewhere) they have permanent shrines at the side of the road. This probably lessens any beneficial impact, but then I suppose it also reduces the distraction potential as they are all similar so you get used to seeing them and aren't trying to read messages as you pass.

Near where I live there are flowers regularly left against the pole of a cashcam. Unfortunately, a couple of kids got killed there after crashing into the cashcam.

They were speeding, so I suppose the cashcam did stop them speeding anymore.

Sad, but true...

They carry the implication that a crash was somehow tied to the road at that location. Although that's possible, it's now only about 15% likely. (i.e. 85% of crashes take place away from traditional black spots). But tying a crash to a location tends to reinforce the idea that the road is to blame while reducing crashes depends on road users taking responsibility for their actions.

So in summary I think that roadside memorials tend to shift perceieved responsibilities in the wrong direction - away from individual road users rather than towards.

I agree in the sense that the road is just sitting there minding its own business until these road users came along and crashed!

The memorial idea reminds me of roads like the N106 from Ales to Nimes ehere there are a lot of black cutouts of men, women and children - one for each death. They certainly reminded me to be extra vigilant but one can't help thinking that an engineering solution might lessen the carnage on such a road.

JT, the latest accident on the A591 at Bannerigg is of course missing from the bright new shiny signs they put up, just beyond Plumgarths, before Ratherheath.
It too will be seen by the parents, who will know that toll has increased by one - and it is THEIR son.

AND the tone of the sign implies the ROAD is dangerous, when in fact it is a combination of poor planning, and bad driving.
There was another closure on Bannerigg YESTERDAY, with 4 mile tail backs in each direction. I dont know if anyone was hurt, but it's alarming that we discussed this only a few days before the tragic accident, which was bound to happen sooenr or later, yet nothing is done to improve the design until somebody dies!!

It should say on the sign "This is a memorial to those who were injured or died due to the incomptance of the Highways Authority, and bad driving."

Now would that drive the message home?

I'm not as familiar with the A591 near Windermere as you will be, Ernest, but for most drivers leaving Windermere having been restricted to 30 mph for long periods the temptation of the open road will be hard to resist so foot down and hang the consequences. :( It's twisty and up and down with a :60: limit is it not?

It is. And too many give in to the temptation of an overtake because the two lanes make them overconfident.

Anyway, I have an idea. Maybe the council could dedicate their NEW road sign to the memory of the youth killed.
Actually it's not "new", it's just that they FINALLY got around to replacing the sign which got knocked down in a previous accident LAST YEAR!

You will notice it was missing when I took THIS shot on January 26th!!

Amazing how all it takes to get the Highways Dept or CAPITA off their well paid ar*es and fix a simple road sign is a FATALITY. :x
I think I'll draw up a list of dodgy signs, and badly fixed up roads, and we could work out how many fatals are needed to get them all fixed.
