I was visiting a supplier my company does business with this week and they kindly picked me up from the airport and dropped me back off.
My observations:
The company director who picked me up was not a good driver. His windscreen was filthy and no amount of screen wash was going to help - visibility was severely reduced. He didn't seem particularly bothered with lane discipline, often bumping over catseyes where the motorway changed course. When merging onto the motorway he crossed over the chevronned area, even though traffic was light and he wouldn't have had any trouble merging further on. He, of course, drove far too close to the vehicle in front and also used his mobile hand-held even though his top of the range car was fitted with an integrated in-car system.
Once our business was completed chat got around to bikes and cars. He mentioned that his 18 year old son wrote off a car within a week of getting his licence. (wonder where he got those driving skills from?) Three weeks later he has just purchased a replacement vehicle for him and hopes his son doesn't wreck that one too, or he won't be getting another one. I suggested that it would be a good idea for him to contact the IAM and get his son to become a member. The way I explained it was that, now he had passed his test, the IAM would teach him
how to drive, not just how to pass the test.
I really hope that both father and son contact their local IAM group. Maybe they'll both learn something?
