The following appears in the current issue of Driving Magazine:

I tried contacting them on Friday to find the source of the claim, but no luck speaking to the right person.

We don't expect official 2005 figures until June 2006.

In 2004 the Government was busy patting itself on the back after the number of people who died in road accidents decreased by 287 people to 3,221. All this despite an increase in road traffic of two per cent that year. However, just a year later the figure has crept up once gain, nearing that of 2003 when 3,508 people lost their lives in road accidents. And the Government, response?

According to Road Safety Minister Steve Ladyman, “Britain has one of the best road safety records in the world.”

If we carry on the way we are, the road safety record of Britain will no longer be amongst the best.

An increase of 287 would appear to be statistically significant. With a standard deviation of about 58, assuming each case is an independent random event, then the increase is about five standard deviations.

It would again seem to show that the Government policy with speed cameras is just not working. Drivers and riders who are being needlessly fined and penalised for minor speed infringement have lost all respect for the whole speed camera policy, yet the Government still insists that this is an effective method of improving road safety. How much longer will they go on deluding themselves about the benefits of speed cameras and continue trying to delude us about this. Presumably they do so because they think it is a cost free method of improving road safety, but sadly the real cost is for the people being killed and injured because of their inept and simplistic attitude to road safety.

Although the "official" figured don't come out for a few months they do exist and you can use a FOI request to get the data region by region.

Aparently they've got to target early.

This bit is from a local ,non web free paper , with a "fact file" --plenty of mention of fatals and cycling - no mention of accidents.

Road casualties cut before time

ROAD-SAFETY chiefs are celebrating after reaching a target for casualty reduction – a massive five years ahead of schedule.

But that does not mean they will be resting an their laurels - instead they are striving to further reduce the number of people killed a injured in Warwickshire. The county road-safety unit is asking all road users to join the campaign.

Figures show that Warwickshire has already achieved 2010 targets set by the Government to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on its roads.

The number of casualties has fallen from 638 in 2000, when the targets were introduced, to 406 in 2005.

County councillor Martin Heatley, the environment cabinet portfolio holder, said "Although these latest figure are very promising no one should become complacent about the dangers faced by all of us on the road."

"Warwickshire’s road-safety unit uses education engineering and enforcement measures, as well at working with the police, fire and rescue and other agencies in an attempt to reduce casualties."

“But we need everyone to continue playing their part by looking out for each other, that way each of us will be doing our bit to help make our roads safer"

Is this just more propaganda and spin about the "benefit" of speed cameras !!!

Wait until they get next year’s figures !!!

I had formed my own opinion - waiting for the RTTM axe to fall - seems that others think the same way.
