Truvelos aren't much higher than Gatsos. In fact they look lower to me.
I don't trust most sites which tell you about the different types of cameras too much, they can get it wrong!

Truvelo: (they are also a weapons manufacturer, in South Africa.)
http://www.truvelouk.com/

RedSpeed:
http://www.redspeed-int.com/en/products_redspeed.htm

Could it be one of them? The photo on there is a very short pole but really they are very tall things (to stop people from burning them down as easily). The pole is usually grey.

The photo on the speedcam site with (pink?) plastic bag around the top is a Monitron (now RedSpeed) Speedcurb (now RedSpeed?!) which is basically the same as a RedSpeed, although as the name suggests they can be used as a red light camera too.

These use road sensors to detect speed and/or red light offences. I don't know how vulnerable to attack the road sensors are. They have a digital camera and send the photos back to base electronically.

i think it looked like a truvelo as it was about only 33% of the size of gatso and it was a few feet higher as well

All the Truvelos i've seen are similar in height and camera size to a Gatso - real give away for a truvello is name on post + 3 lines very close together, ON ROAD JUST BEFORE CAMERA. - if higher and substantially smaller - possibly not a truvello.

I think there is some confusion here, the descriptions of the cameras in questions are of a RedSpeed RedSpeed (aka Monitron SpeedCurb/RedGuard).
These are tall and thin and have the camera right on top.

Truvelos and Gatsos are pretty similar in size and have the camera "hanging off" the pole so it can be lowered.

There are some photos on both of the links I provided, but the RedSpeed one is in real life much much taller than in the photo.

RedSpeed/Monitron SpeedCurb: (best picture I could find!)

Gatso: (rear view)

Not to scale ;)

Between Mitcham Cricket Green and the Savacentre Colliers Wood (Church Road) and next to Figges Marsh (Tooting to Mitcham) (A217).

They are clearly more vandal proof being so high up (approx lamp post height).

However they are smaller and harder to see and out of the normal line of view. It seems to me that they will further distract drivers and hence inevitably increase accidents.

They will probably be able to hide this from the public by their usual crooked use of statistics that fortunately for them (due to the useless education system) the general public will never see.

I only went down there once and noticed it by the road markings. There could easily be one the other way.

There is one each way on Church Road

Latest info is <a href="http://www.speedcam.co.uk/index2.htm">here</a>. They are Monitrons. Now drivers will be looking at the sky instead of the road. Great.

Ok, so it appears that Monitron and RedSpeed are two names (or trading names?) for the same company.

They make three devices, the SpeedCurb (speed camera), RedGuard (red light camera) and RedSpeed (both).

Here is some info about the new cameras in London:
RedSpeed to Reduce Road Casualties in London
More prossecutions = more lives saved, obviously.

Also they are (were) 'saving lives' by having cameras on motorway roadworks hidden in the trees:
RedSpeed Enforce Speed Restrictions at M6 Roadworks - hey, there's a letter by Callaghan!

http://www.speedcam.co.uk/london.htm
Does the double-headed camera pole have type approval?
Isn't it interesting how they dug an ugly trench right around the current gatso on Lea Bridge Road, Leyton, obviously they didn't think it was safe to have the road without a camera even for a few days?!

You may want to check again next time you're passing that way, there's a Redspeed on Seven Sisters Road (near Finsbury Park station) which was planted next to an old gatso about 3-4 weeks ago, then uprooted at some point over the next week or two later, and has now been replanted in the same spot... Looks as if it's gone, or is about to go, live - bubble-wrap has gone from the post and the road markings have been redone.
