Here's a very interesting webpage from someone who has attended a Speed Awareness Course in Lancashire today.

The author got pinged on a moped doing 36 in a 30 and hasn't yet passed his car test.

http://www.lmars.co.uk/speedaware.html

Interesting to note that the lecturers expressed doubts about the use of speed cameras, but put a lot of emphasis on COAST.

I've heard reports that other SCPs engage much more in bullying indoctrination.

If only as much attention was paid to other motoring offences!

These 'speed awareness' courses are a great idea in principle, provided of couse speed limits are set appropriately.

Unfortunately the majority of enforcement tends to focus along roads with recently imposed speed limits, set by the local council; normally at the point where it would be safest ot drive fast. (eg on a staight section of the road with low hazard density)

Furthurmore, i understand these courses are only available to those who have only been 'caught' going 35 or 36mph.

Idiots most in need of education (ie those driving at 49mph past a school at 3:30pm, during term time) do not recieive the education they desperately need.

Looks like the course hasn't changed from when I did it back in November '03 (35mph in a 30 - another 6 months and I'll be able to do the course again if caught speeding). I couldn't have written that report any better.

Had a friend who should have been on the course today for 37mph (probably the same class as this report, all though I think they use a couple of locations around Preston), but she has had to re-arrange it as one of her kids is ill (has to get a doctors note to send to the camera partnership) and husband is out of the country on business.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but i thought that one of the definitions of a moped was that it's not capable of exceeding 30mph??
Or was the author riding a moped styled motorbike?

edit: never mind, I've just read the article.. he says he's been doing 45mph on it....

Hi,

I was the author that article which Peter linked to, so I've come out of my anon. state now.

The reason my moped can do over 30 is because when I turned 17 last June I got it desrestricted. This was all done legally, and it put about £30 on my insurance premium.

So I'm not riding illegally before anyone asks, the only illegal thing about my bike is presently the lack of a proper L plate on the back because some toerag ripped the original one off "for a laugh"...
