I've heard an unsubstantiated claim that, from July, speeding offences of less than 20% over the limit will attract 2 points, while those of greater than 20% over the limit will go up to 6 points. I can't find a source for this...is it true?

I believe this is somewhere in the proposed so-called "road safety bill"

There is a summary here:
http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_rdsafety/documents/pdf/dft_rdsafety_pdf_033679.pdf

And if you would like to read it in all it's legal glory then it's here:
http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200405/cmbills/010/2005010.htm

Ah, right.

I also note that there's some stuff in there about "Speed assessment detection devices", so looks like those of us with Road Angels might be in a spot of bother, too.

Hmmm.

I think it's radar/laser detectors = bad, GPS devices = ok.
I'm sure there's a thread on here about this bill but I couldn't find it. I know I've read some of this before! :)

Does anyone know what the law will say about integrated devices which incorporate GPS and Laser safety facilities?

So if this bill goes through does it mean that doing 24mph in a 20mph zone at 3am on two occasions results in a 6 month ban??

A points escalator has its pitfalls. With the manufacturers claiming a +/2mph accuracy on measurement how can they prove you were doing X mph?

It was a nonsense anyway, and I beleive it has been dropped as an idea.

I'd rather see something like 6 points for 10 mph over in a 20, 3 points 10 over in a 30 and, say 2 points for 20 over in a 70, if you see what I mean...
