or traffic lights on the sliproad to us

they did have them around southampton but they seem to have been abandoned these days. a bad idea binned for once???

however, getting on the M8 at Glasgow today took half an hour or so and what was the hold up? traffic lights on the sliproad :x

i can see the safety aspect of them as they will break up the traffic joining the motorway during peak periods which does effectively reduce the motorway by one lane for traffic flowing past the junction but at what expense? gridlocking the area around the junction?

are they a good thing or a bad thing? personally, i say bad

Absolutely pointless, IMHO.

From a safety point of view, they should not be used unless the motorway traffic is at a crawl, or stopped - otherwise vehicles on the sliproad have a few yards to accelerate up to motorway speeds
But when the motorway traffic is at a crawl then they're not needed anyway.

Yes, an absurd idea. The ones at the bottom of the slip at J10 of the M6 regularly stop me at around 7.30, usually when the motorway is busy but flowing reasonably freely. This gives me a few hundred yards to get a (sometimes 40+ ton) truck up to 56 mph in order to join the motorway safely. Scanny will tell you that that's impossible; usually I'm lucky to be doing over 25

Not driven through any of these yet but they sound scary :o One of the most dangerous things on motorways are drivers who will not accelerate along a slip-road and try joining the main carriageway at 30mph. But even my car (Pug 406 diesel, 0-60 in about a week  ) can achieve 60-70 along a proper slip-road before the motorway. If these lights are in place then I fear the number of accidents on the main carriageways passing slip roads will increase significantly. Of course it will be all the insane drivers doing 71mph that cause these accidents so we'll see motorway speed limits reduced to 50 all over the place :x

I don't think they have been abandoned, they have recently been put on the A58 junction with the M6.

I can't see any rhyme or reason for them there - I've driven past at all times of day and night and never seen any particular delays?

Saw some yesterday (on the M62/M60 I think).

I had always assumed they would be at the start of the sliproad but no, they are near the join with the motorway.

Madness.
